i honestly didn’t think this last book would be my favorite of the series— but it absolutely was. there were so many new elements that put this book at the top for me. i loved the new location, and the location change mid-story line, at that. i loved how thomas and audrey’s storyline continued to evolve, and how there were twists thrown in when i honestly did not think much else could happen. i loved, loved, loved the ending and am so proud of audrey rose’s character development. overall, an INCREDIBLE ending book to an incredible series!

This series. It easily has become my favorite series I’ve read. It incorporated literally everything I love in books. Historical fiction, romance, mystery, plus the addition of forensics and performing autopsies was a huge bonus for me. The main character is the perfect balance of feminine, and throwing social standards to the wind. She’s hardened, but still allows herself to feel. I think she balances between the two perfectly. And Thomas…there are no words to explain just how perfect his character is. I’m afraid no future love interest will stack up to the standards he’s created. I love that this book brought the story full circle, and upon completing it feels like all loose ends are closed and there’s finally a sense of peace. While I wish I could read about their story until the end of time, I’m happy with the ending I was given. I know this will be a story I’ll come back to in the future, and I highly recommend everybody read it.

Honestly, this was the book I wish I’d had for Escaping from Houdini. I don’t know why, but I really didn’t like the romantic problems in Escaping from Houdini. While it is true that the “interrupted marriage” is an old trope, and not the most original, I bore it better because I knew that Thomas and Audrey would go to Hell and back to be together, which carried me through the story. I’m happy to finally see these two lovebirds finally together.

The only thing that holds me back from giving it a full five stars is the mystery part. It felt too much like an afterthought. Maybe it’s because unlike the other mysteries, there was no guesswork in who the culprit was. I’ve even heard the theory that H. H. Holmes was the Ripper, and it left no surprise for me. I almost wish that the author had kept to what was in her original book, Stalking Jack the Ripper, because I feel like that would’ve had more impact than H. H. Holmes turning out to be the murderer instead. But this is just my opinion.

Otherwise, I’d say if you’re looking for a good read with a wonderful romance, I would strongly recommend this series.

Twists and turns that we're both great and disappointing! Overall I really enjoyed the book, but some parts felt underdeveloped. I wish we had more of Audrey Rose's grandma for example. There definitely did not need to be as much of Thomas's obsession with sweets which really went hard in this book unlike in the other three. (It's a weird thing to be bothered by, but it was distracting).

Overall it was a good ending to the series.
