Night Broken has you in for a nonstop ride of emotions. Tons of action, witty banter, eye rolling moments, heart felt moments and a little heat on the side.

Adams ex-wife Christy is the worst. The B...yes, I called her a B and I'm sure you know what that stands for - is outrageous. Mercy is a saint to deal with that hot mess and protect the woman on top of it! In true Christy fashion, she runs to Adam looking for a place to hide out and get protection against a stalker/killer that's hunting her down. Unfortunately for everyone involved it's not that simple, it never is. Christy brings death and destruction along to Mercy and Adam's door. Not only are Mercy, Adam, and Jessie pulled in to her drama, the entire pack is as well. I think she's my most hated character of all time. Even though she's not a villain, she isn't innocent. Sure she loves Jessie (her daughter) and Adam in her own screwed up way, but she manipulates everyone around her and tells lies of omission on a regular basis, yet some how she gets away with it. Her actions put others in harms way, but she gets a pass just because she's human. Ridiculous.

Night Broken is the 8th installment in the Mercy Thompson series. When Adam receives a call from his ex-wife claiming to have a stalker after her and possibly killing a guy she was dating he has no choice but to offer to help. It should be easy for a pack of werewolves to scare off a human. When the police find a large amount of mutilated bodies human as well as animal it’s looks like the wolves might be the ones the police are looking at but with Mercy’s help she proves it’s something else a different kind of magic.

When Christy’s stalker show up at Mercy’s shop she learns the hard way that he’s not a human but something much more powerful and more dangerous than any of them expected. Thanks to having the help of Tad her old boss’s son who happens to be half fey who is able to stop the monster but he gets away. As if that’s not enough the owner of the walking stick has shown up demanding its return or else. Plus at home Christy is doing everything in her power to cause problems for Mercy coming between her and the pack. Will they survive the fire monster? Will Christy be sent packing? Will she get the walking stick from Coyote?

What else can I say about Mercy other than I love her as a character she’s my all-time favorite. She’s not your typical helpless heroine but she kicks ass plus she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty working as a mechanic. She’s one of those characters you can’t help loving because she will risk it all to keep her family and friends alive. She’s befriended all kind of supernatural beings throughout the series this one has more of her walker story with a new character as well as Coyote returned. We also have Adam who I think is a perfect fit for her, as well as his ex-wife Christy who I would have given to the monster to be done with.

Mercy Thompson books are those I don’t even have to read the synopsis for anymore. I hear there is a new book coming out and I’ll drop my current book for it. Like the prior books Night Broken grabs the reader right from the start drawing you into Mercy’s world where she lives with the wolves. I finished the book in one afternoon unable to put it down my hubby even made dinner so I could finish it because I had to know how it was going to end. This installment deals with a new supernatural being/monster that we haven't seen before but brings back Coyote as well as a new character. The characters are easy to connect with you can’t help loving they are just so real I feel like I’m there with Mercy. Every book she surprises me growing better and better as a character you could say she just gets better with age. I like that the pack is starting to respect her more and that Honey is coming around because she’s one of my favorite supporting characters. I think the author has done an amazing job creating another fantastic chapter of Mercy’s life. I honestly can’t say enough how much I love this series it’s my favorite, the one I would save in a fire, or zombie apocalypse and would cry if I lost them. Also the number one series I recommend if you love the urban fantasy. I highly suggest you check her it you won’t be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this installment I the Mercy-verse. Loved Gary! Hated Christy so very much! I disliked how much Auriele and Mary Jo cling to her, but I am loving Honey’s character Mira and more. I love the relationship between Mercy and Adam and how solid it feels, even given all this relationship turmoil. Darryl is growing on me, and Warren and Kyle are as always fantastic! I wish we’d gotten more of Ben, but maybe next time.

"An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart." (From Amazon)

I have caught up on the Mercy Thompson series, but now have to wait for another adventure. I loved this adventure and the suspense element. As much as I did not like Adam's ex I am glad we saw her character.

I keep reading the Mercy Thompson novels out of some misguided sense of nostalgia. Mercy and Adam's relationship is saccharine. The writing is wooden and awkward. I hope I remember to read this review when I am tempted to read the next in the series.

Night Broken is fast-paced and filled with action, fights and romance, on top of that, there's a little drama because Adam's ex comes to stay with them - for once seeking help and comfort from the pack.

Full review to come soon.

Night Broken
4 Stars

The victim of a vicious stalker, Adam’s ex, Christy, arrives on the doorstep and proceeds to make Mercy’s life miserable. Whether it is taking over the kitchen or the bathroom or the entire pack, Christy takes full advantage of her situation and Mercy make it her top priority to locate the stalker just to get Christy out of her hair. Unfortunately, things are not as they seem and the threat posed by Christy’s less than human stalker becomes more and more dangerous to everyone Mercy holds dear.

An entertaining addition to the series with an action packed storyline and compelling character development. The pack’s history with Christy is quite insightful and it was interesting to see which members could be manipulated and which ones couldn’t.

Adam’s interactions with Christy are the most annoying element as even though he is quite aware of her narcissistic personality, he still allows her to browbeat him and isn’t as assertive as he could have been with her. He should have put her in her place immediately rather than waiting until Mercy’s life was in danger.

Another highlight is the reappearance of Coyote and the Walking Stick, but this is undermined once again by the negative portrayal of the female characters other than Mercy and Julie (although Honey does seem to have mellowed and the possibility of a love interest for her is intriguing).

In sum, despite my issues with the series, the books are fun to read.
