Biden writes exactly how he speaks: bluntly, from the heart. There's no arguing that he's a compassionate and caring person who has undergone incredible personal tragedy. The most moving parts were about his son Beau which the story is centered around. This also went into the large foreign policy role he played during his time as vice president and his skill with negotiations, but these parts lagged a lot. Thought it would be worthwhile to check out before the November election. Since the story ends on his 2016 presidential decision, it's also interesting to see how he's come full circle back to it.

You’ve heard of Joe Biden, lifelong politician and former Veep. You know of his tragic early adulthood, of his wife and 3 little kids being in a car accident, and only his 2 sons surviving. This is his telling of the time when on those surviving sons, Beau, was living with and dying from brain cancer. At that time, Biden was VP, with several important foreign policy crises happening, AND a 2016 presidential bid to consider. We know how it all ended. This story tells you why.

Please don't stone me to death because I've always liked Joe Biden, but this smacks a lot like a well-crafted entree into the 2020 campaign.

Three stars. Biden wants us to know that he would have been a great President and likely would have won, if he had chosen to run. But he didn't. But he could have. But he didn't. But....(repeat repeat)

Loved this. He seemed the most human of political leaders.

I wanted to like this book; I wanted to love it! I love Joe Biden and wish he would have run for POTUS. But I expected this to be about his son, his relationship with is son, and his son's illness. That is all weaved through, but a lot is about his political work as VP during the time of his son's illness.

The writing is competent enough but nothing to wow anybody. It is heartfelt, just not what I was expecting.

Such a beautiful book about a friendship (Biden and Obama), the love between a father and son (Biden and his son, Beau, who died of brain cancer), and the love within the Biden family. Biden read this book, and his emotion can still be heard as he shares the agonizing pain of his son's illness, the support and friendship he had in Obama, and the things family and friends did in support of his family. It's a tragic, but beautiful story.

I've always really liked and respected Joe Biden, but after reading this book I have a whole new love and admiration for him. A very good, honest and sincere person who I sorely wish was currently in the Whitehouse.
