One of my favorites that I have read this year. The tennis matches gave me strong Rocky vibes...so intense and specific with the blow-by-blow. Long live Carrie Soto!

QUICK TAKE: I wanted to love it, but this Malibu Rising spin-off left me wanting more. I loved the alternating POVs in Malibu and Daisy Jones, and thought this book was sorely missing the perspective of Carrie's grizzled love interest and her younger tennis nemesis. Carrie is also a very tough character to spend a lot of time with, and I think breaking up her scenes with those of some of the supporting cast could have given the book a little more levity and depth. It's TJR though, so it's still a very commercial, breezy read, and I did really like the father/daughter story at the center.

Just Okay - I wanted to read this after reading Malibu Rising, thinking there had to be more to Carrie Soto. For the first half of the book there isn’t. She lives up to the “Battle Axe” and “Bitch” titles. Then I caught myself - would I judge a male player the same way? Am I being unfair to the character? I don’t know. It’s an important question but not one the book dove into very deeply. By the end I wondered why I wanted to read this. Just okay.

4,75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pre-Review: Taylor Jenkins Reid Never let me down

Sooooo. That. Was. Amazing.

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s has a superior talent at creating characters with such depth they feel real. Their stories, their struggles, their lives all feel real. I couldn’t relate to Carrie Soto more, besides the fact I have 0 athletic ability but I resonate with every part of her and I did not want to put this book down.

The reason it’s not a five for me, is because TJR always just misses the mark just a little when it comes to writing diverse characters. The inserts of the Spanish dialogue were a little heavy and too frequent that it didn’t feel like she was making a diverse character worth representation but proving she could write a latina character (which she had received criticism about before). I speak Spanish and I felt like there was other ways to do this right.

Nonetheless a very good book and one that had left me with a book hangover.

Excellent absolutely excellent! This book made me cry so much, have my heart constantly beating, and laugh out loud many times! I fell in love with the characters so it was very emotional throughout the whole book. 10/10 read!

Long live Carrie Soto, and bless TJR’s incredible style of writing and believable characters. Even for someone who isn’t all too interested in tennis, this held my attention for the entire duration. Thoroughly enjoyed, much loved.
