Very strong sequel to a very strong start of a series, in my opinion. The temptation to skip over large chunks of the ocean voyage must have been strong, but the book is much better for the time it takes in that uncomfortable liminal space. One thing that I think works very well is how the cultural distance from the Chinese characters is communicated; it's clear that the English characters just don't understand them most of the time, rather than them being Just Strange.

I had a wonderful time reading this book. I thought it was excellent. I'm excited to read the next book.

Took me a great deal longer to finish this installment but worth it in the end. I do wish some parts near the end were more fleshed out while other parts, in the beginning, were described in great detail. Temeraire is as always charming and well earned his rank of my favorite character.

I continue to enjoy this series and the characters. This book dragged on a bit for me so I didn’t like it quite as well as the first. I’ll definitely continue on with the series.

A great second book - really delves deep into the broader world of the Napoleonic era with dragons. Lots of action at the end, and lots of political maneuvering.
