Very short, but definitely more intriguing than Norwegian Wood. As my second read from Murakami (Norwegian being the first one) I immediately noticed his writing style and his lack of knowledge and somewhat heavy prejudice towards girls. Why does he always have to write his female characters like that? Men, huh?
Regardless, it was more exciting and I felt more reading this 13-page story rather than the Norwegian one. Not saying that Norwegian isn't interesting. I just found this piece more appealing (for me).
Maybe I cracked Murakami's formula of writing. A disrupt and loner man who doesn't understand a distressed, sad and depressed woman. And an ending that would make you think and ponder things.

I missed most of the inter-textual connections to Faulkner's short story of the same name, so I didn't find the philosophical observations super profound. Perhaps I'll find the message and/or writing more genius after I read Faulkner's "Barn Burning."
Chilling story. You *know* something's off, but you don't know what even after you finish. Then you step away and while you're doing the dishes, the realization hits you like a truck.
The ending is gorgeous "December's come again, and the winter birds fly overhead. And I keep on getting older." I don't know why, but the confusion and the desperation of leaving a mystery unsolved is packed so perfectly into those two sentences.
