I actually really enjoyed this. I feel like I would have liked it a little more if I hadn't read The Winner's Trilogy two years ago and felt a little closer to the characters. Like I don't remember what happened to Arin's parents, so this might have struck a little closer to home if I remembered. But beside that, I just actually really liked the tale his mother told him??

A beautiful scene of Arin's mother telling him a bedtime story. Seeing this is likely the last time he saw his mother, as well as how much 'the stars' play into his character, I have a feeling this will play into the series somehow, but can also be read on it's own and is a beautiful if bitter-sweet story from Herrani mythology. It almost has a haunting sort of beauty to it, and I loved getting to see this scene, and more so that I was able to love this so much after struggling with The Winner's Crime. This is the prose and storytelling I expected after Winner's Curse, and it was such a refreshing reminded of why I loved the first book so much, and Arin's character in this series!

Ahh, how I love stories with folklore. This was such a gorgeous short story. The details were elegant and poetic, and I adored the story of the snow god and her brother-sister moon. In a way, it touched my heart and it made me nostalgic, almost sad. For being so small in length, it delivered a beautiful punch.

[This also piqued my interest for the trilogy, but I'm stubborn and don't want to read it before the third book comes out. We'll see how long that lasts.]

This was definitely a bit odd. I loved the scene between Arin and his mother, but the story she told was a bit confusing and difficult to follow.

Still a cute behind the scenes little story.

Oh. My. Stars. (Did you see what I did there?)

A fourteen page prequel and I got goosebumps no less than three times. Fourteen pages. THREE TIMES.

I'm not as informed about the constellations myths, so it's possible my awe is misdirected, but that has got to be the most beautifully, heart-wrenching explanation for the stars that I've ever heard. And the insightfulness of this child--good god man.

I was dying to get my hands on this book before reading the prequel. Now I'm dying in AGONY. Gah.

“But we don’t think too well when we want too much.”

This was such a sad, bittersweet little tale told as a bedtime story for Arin by his mom sometime before the Herrani war. It is also a kind of foreshadowing to the events of the Winner's Curse, as well as evolving some of the mythology of this world, what the Herrani were like before the war and what were their thoughts on the Venturian. A nice little addition to the trilogy.
