Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass by Lana Del Rey

Reminiscent of Sylvia Plath, the long form poetry was beautiful, haunting and vulnerable. It reads like a Lana Del Rey song, especially “Hope is a Dangerous Thing For a Woman Like Me To Have” which is one of my favourite songs by her. My only issue would be the haikus at the end. They seemed unnecessary and tacked on to fill space. They didn’t have the same power as the rest of the poems. Maybe if they’d been scattered among the other poems it would have had a different effect.

I'm not going to rate this, because I'm not a big poetry person so I don't really know how to. I liked it, though now - a few days later - I barely remember anything. I also fell asleep towards the end, her voice is so soothing.

The background noise was too loud for my taste, and I think some of the poems would've workd better as songs or short stories.

I'm a big fan of LDR's music and buying this book, I wasn't really expecting much, but I knew it would be entertaining enough. Well, she completely shocked me with her talent and her right use of syllables in a haiku. There is so much more behind the Lana in music than I originally thought and I'm grateful for it. I hope she writes more in the future, be it poems or essays, I feel like she has much to say and a beautiful manner to say it with.

This book of poetry was quite lovely. I imagine that it was better because I listened to it in audiobook format narrated by the author herself. While poetry is hard to understand sometimes I think Lana Del Rey accomplished a fun and emotional collection of poems. This is a great book to dip your toes into reading poetry for fun, for the love of it, or simply to get a taste of what larger volumes are like from other poets. Keeping in mind each persons poetry feels and communicates differently with each reader who reads it.
