Art is a sad and lonely boy who grew up to be a sad and lonely man, and “M” is the only person to ever really know and connect with him. I also appreciated that this included nods to real life (e.g. Mercy’s origin story is real folklore).
I loved it; I think this type of horror is becoming my favorite. Similar to Our Wives Under the Sea, I think the story of Art/M will stay with me.

Literally NOTHING happens, I mean nothing. It’s just two super annoying characters having a ‘who is more of an outcast loser’ contest for 250+ pages. The writing is so pretentious and over the top I’m surprised I actually made it all the way to the end.
At one point “Art” literally has a puppet show fight between two coats as his final demonstration to try and prove a point he has been poorly trying to make for the last 200 pages. Do yourself a favor and don’t read this book.

I usually like books with odd formats but this one just didn't work. Mercy/Mary's commentary was the only part that kept me reading. But you still don't know what's real and what's not in the end.
