The message of the book- that we should hold onto and value our history, even the parts of it that are painful- was profound, and the writing itself was beautiful, but for some reason this one didn't stick with me despite the premise itself sounding interesting. Maybe it was because the fast pace doesn't really give the narrative time to really flesh out the characters as much as they could have been, maybe it's because the plot kind of jumps from place to place in a manner that feels haphazard rather than artfully executed, or maybe I'm just not the intended audience for this story--either way, I didn't find myself connecting to it as much as I hoped I would.

It’s always hard for me to know how to rate such short books because I feel like it was over before I got to really connect with the characters. I enjoyed how the author used time and followed Yetu’s story throughout while also weaving in the experiences of past historians.

I'm very satisfied having read it once, but i already want to again, just to better understand certain parts with context.

I didn’t hate it, but I typically prefer more depth and complexity to plots and characters. The allegorical symbolism didn’t go unnoticed (ie, understanding the complex emotions produced by generational trauma of the oppressed due to white supremacy). I enjoyed the portions that leaned into that message, but looking beyond that I felt the story lacked. Which made it feel simple- more like a grim fable than a novel. Probably intentional, but doesn’t mean I have to like it 😅

Truthfully, the afterword made me appreciate the novel more than actually reading it.

Casual writing with additional normalized queer flex, but fundamental is a fascinating concept  recall from time to time.

The story addresses the severe emotional trauma associated with keeping alive the memories of the past atrocities and horrors suffered by your people, and yet also the great importance it holds for the collective community, to have a sense of self and origin, to continue to keep the painful knowledge alive
