Things I like about Pippa Grant and her books as I’ve now read 2.5:
-The wide web of characters that make cameos in each others books
-Her over the top characters/dialogue/goofiness that makes the families and found families feel ridiculous and real
-Some super cute, super funny moments

The things that are keeping the books from being a 4/5 star are… that sometimes it feels like a little too much. Like in this book, the hero is a 30 year old professional baseball player traded from his great hometown team to the worst team in baseball. He’s a hot, muscular virgin (because he thinks he’s cursed). He adopts a fluffy dog he names Coco Puff and wears the dog in a BABY SLING. All of those things are chef’s kiss/A+ - but it goes a little too far when Coco Puff takes up so much page time with a collar that spits out curse words every time he barks.

But I liked this book. I liked it more than the first book I read from her, Flirting With the Frenemy. Maybe because it was sports related? or I liked the heroine Mackenzie in this one more?

Mackenzie is a hardcore baseball fan. Like….. DIEHARD. She has close ties to the team but can’t speak to any baseball players because she gets too nervous. She’s leading a “Save Fiery” campaign (the dragon mascot of the Fireballs) because the replacement options (a duck, a meatball, a firebug, and something with 4 penises… I can’t remember the animal) suck. In chapter 1 she steals the meatball costume by literally wearing it out of the facility and cockblocks the hero as a meatball.

The earnestness of her obsession with baseball, the team aspect as Brooks becomes more engrained in the team, and friendships of everyone involved was really fun.

BTW- LGBTQ rep is that Mackenzie has two gay dads and they're drag queens and yes they - as drag queens - are involved in the storyline and it was great.

Loved This

Okay one star off for the blonde heroine because insert the million and one clichéd heroine description rants I've written here. Otherwise I adored this story and laughed so hard with every page I read. It was excellent

This got off to a bit of a rocky start but I eventually warmed up to Pippa Grant's writing style. It was over the top and silly at times but also a good deal of fun. Brooks and Mackenzie were honestly kind of perfect together - I loved how sweet they were with each other. And I adored how much Brooks loved the puppy he adopted; it was so cute. One scene that'll live in my head rent-free? Well it took place in the kitchen and wow, it was hot.

Mackenzie is hilarious in her commitment to her team and her superstitions, and the whole conceit of the FMC doing everything in her power to make sure the MMC doesn't have sex with anyone, even herself, is a twist I have not seen before. I enjoyed watching Brooks just kind of wait her out, and learn to love his new team.

This is one of the funniest books, Pippa Grant is the Queen of the Rom-Com. This one is one of my favorites of hers. It's become one of my comfort reads when I need a funny, (and still spicy) escape. I love Brooks and MacKenzie
