The first story scared me a little, but I'm glad I pushed on because it was well worth it. Loved learning about these folk tales through a feminist lens. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative ways these women actualized themselves. I also adored the way many of the stories ended up being weaved together.

I wanna buy a physical copy, reread it and then give the book to all my friends.

this was an interesting read, mostly because i expected more mysticism from it, if not outright horror. now keep in mind that i didn't read the synopsis before reading this and only had word of mouth and my fuzzy memory to go on, so i didn't really expect for the ghosts and the other supernatural creatures to be painted in such an ordinary way. i find that their roles and the usage of japanese folktales in the short stories to be very interesting and quite refreshing, though. their role in the stories isn't to scare the characters or readers. instead, they're there to help the characters; giving them life lessons, inspiring them. they do so for the readers as well. the use of these folktales as a media to tackle the matters of feminism is really interesting and quite well-done too. with these traditional folktales, to which has been added some modern feminism viewpoints, the short stories challenge society's preconceived notion on womanhood; how a woman should be, who a woman should be, and their place in this world. among other things. some short stories i enjoyed more than others but overall, this was a wonderful read.
