Beyond being a beautiful way of understanding addiction, which is enormously misunderstood by most it seems, this has so much to offer when it comes to understanding developmental psychology. Makes my 4 years of GCSE and A-level psychology seem completely worthless given the actually just incorrect things they taught us, as proven in this book.
It proves how important re-shaping our understanding of how the brain develops really is.
I encourage anyone to read this as it offers ways of understanding that would be hugely beneficial to society and peoples lives with anecdotal stories that range from hopeful to heartbreaking. These understandings aren’t unique to the book but it gets them across very effectively.

Narration wasn't great, but the theories of addiction he proposes are thought-provoking and worth serious consideration.

What I appreciate most about Gabor Maté is the ownership of his humanity and willingness to allow us to learn alongside his missteps and flaws. This book hits all the important categories for me - harm reduction, role of trauma, neuroscience, biosocial theory, recognition of behavioral addictions, countertransference/societal attitudes, attachment injuries - all the good stuff that helps build compassion for our fellow humans during times of increased illness. Continues the trend of loving every single piece of work this man produces.
