Great book...I started reading this book to a third grade class during a long-term subbing and I wish I could have finished it with them. It is a great time piece and indirectly teaches a lot about the 1960s and Black Panther Party. Delphine was my favorite character. I truly enjoyed this book!

You don't have to be a kid to enjoy this book. There is more here then three kids growing up. It is a story about life as real as real can be. A voice that suck you in and holds you. Can there be love in the pain of life? Yes! Read this book.

A great book. I sit with Delphine regarding Cecile. Wishing for more about that story, though this is a children's middle grade book, so it's on target.

Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern find themselves flying unaccompanied across the United States to be reunited with their mother who walked out on the family several years previously. Their mother has not been in contact with the girls, but it is apparent that their father has kept track of her and knows how to contact her. It is set during the 60's amidst social unrest and the civil rights movement. At eleven, Delphine hopes to find her mother "motherly," warm and nurturing but those adjectives fall far short of reality. Delphine has had to shoulder a lot of the responsibility of caring for her two younger sisters since her mother's disappearance. She is hoping that her mother will see the error of her ways and become the mother Delphine desires and needs.

Not a topic I was expecting - three girls visiting their estranged mother in 1968 Oakland and getting involved with the Black Panther movement. I liked Delphine a lot, and I thought the story was well-written and thought-provoking.

I loved this book so much. What power in this story. Even more meaningful to finish it on the day of the second Women’s March. Recommend for readers ages ten and up. Teens will get more out of it and understand the important historical elements.
