There are books out there that get hyped up as a “must read” and then you read it and just feel let down (I’m looking at you, The Goldfinch). But this book does not disappoint - beautifully written, intriguing characters, I could go on and on. I loved every single page.

I started reading this along side my daughter for her school assignment. I felt it was a really slow moving start, but about 1/3 of the way through I was hooked.

I cannot believe I waited so long to read this book! Enveloped in mystery, depth, heart ache and mesmerising descriptions of nature, the story of the ‘marsh girl’ is captivating and wondrous. A true love story that illustrates society as judgemental, coarse and scared of those who hold the strength to survive despite the perceptions of those who know nothing. A truly amazing read and captivating story of personal survival.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. The story of Kya growing up by herself in the marsh and all the descriptions of nature and her growing relationship with Tate. After that, I started to lose interest. I didn't buy into her
Spoilerrelationship with Chase
.
The murder mystery was sort of interesting, but I thought the court case dragged on. Then everything jumps and the whole story is wrapped up in a couple of chapters.
Was I surprised by the ending?
Spoiler Yes because I didn't see how it happened that way. I know it was set up by the comments about the insects, but at no point did she seem like the type of person who would do that. I also am not sure that Chase would have continued to pursue her. Also why did they never put her on the stand and ask whether she killed him?

If they make this into a tv series/movie I think they will end up making significant changes.

I just could not put this book down, loved it! The plot just unravelled slowly, creeping up on you and then startling you with the ending. The ‘marsh girl’ characterisation was fully formed and you were able to watch her grow and be shaped by circumstances yet still forge her own path. Fantastic book!
