An interesting take on the post-apocalyptic world tale. I enjoyed the struggles of the main character.

Girl lives in an alternate reality where vampires are the slavers to humans. One night in the underbelly of society, girl is attacked and dying when a vampire offers to make her immortal. Girl makes obvious decision to become undead and some semblance of a story follows.

This was superbly meh for me. I almost DNFed it about half way, but I skipped about twenty pages and then skim read to find out how it ended. Maybe I just wasn't a fan of Julie Kagawa's writing style (which is a shame because there were other books of hers that I was going to read). More likely it was a combination of sub-par plot that dragged like an anchor and boring boring boring characters. I don't really recommend this - it just wasn't particularly interesting.

FIRST OF ALL WHY DO THE GERMAN COVER PPL DESTROY A WHOLE SERIES WITH THEIR COVERS?? (I mean they changed it now but still)

And secondly I love this series so much and I love Allie, gosh I love her so much.

And the world, the destroyed, apocalyptic, brutal world. So much love.

Vampire and dystopian stories feel a bit passe, but I found this on sale on Audible and it sounded entertaining so I gave it a shot. I mostly enjoyed this book. The action scenes were great and always held my attention. Allison is a great character-- rough, distrustful, smart-mouthed, but with a very strong resolve to stick to what she thinks is right, even when given no reason to continue on that path. This was kind of long on the set-up and then there are lots of plot ties left unresolved to set up the trilogy. And the love interest was kind of too good to be true, you know, besides the fact he's a human and Allison is a vampire. I am not adverse to reading the rest of this series, but I'm not going to go out and get to it right away, which probably means I won't do it at all. Yet another perfectly good book, but nothing that got me really excited.

I liked this and Allie was an excellent (yay, ethnic!) protagonist but the ease with which most of the events at the end unfolded bugged me and I hated that they did.

The first two thirds was excellent however and I liked the mentor/student relationship between Allie and Kanin as well as how Allie made the shift from prey to predator. I was not happy that Kanin dropped off the face of the earth halfway through since I thought he was a pretty interesting character esp after we figure out why he is shuffling through endless amounts of paper. Since this is YA I figured a swoony boy would enter the picture at some point and Zeke did not disappoint, but his relationship with Jeb seemed overly dramatic and out of place. His rejection and subsequent reluctant re-acceptance of Allie was good though and completely in character for a boy betrayed.

The Immortal Rules was a good start from a 'new to me' author, I will be on the lookout for Blood of Eden 2)

This is a post-apocalyptic vampire series. I have no idea what enticed me to read this book but damn am I glad that I did. The beginning is a little slow but that's just us getting introduced to the characters and the world that this story is set in. I mean, there are so many vampire books out there, I think the collective thought that everyone had when this came out was, "Another one!?" You can't really blame us though, the amount of cheesy vampire love stories there are out is ridiculous. But not this one! This was a refreshing post-apocalyptic novel about a girl trying to survive and preserve humanity against the vampires that now rule the land. Allison lives in a vampire city where she scavenges for food and survives against the vampires and the rabids, humans and creatures that have been turned and go crazy with bloodlust instead. Long story short, one night on a dangerous supply run she had to fight for her life saving her friends. After dying and accepting the choice to become the one thing she hates, she has to pass as human to survive on the outside and try to save humanity from the rabid disease that is threatening humans and vampires lives together.

The characters in this book are just amazing! I really found myself loving the amount of detail in their personalities, it made it very believable. Kanin, even after reading all the books, is still my favourite. For his strength, willpower, wiseness, and the list can go on. Allison respected him and I found myself respecting him as well. Kanin is the perfect leader; ruthless, gruesome, hard, and tough. She definitely had to work her butt off just to keep up with him training her. Kanin is a huge character in general for this world, he also is a huge player when it comes to the pre-apocalyptic and post- apocalyptic world. Allison, being new to vampirism, needed Kanin's help to adjust but quickly showed her strength and independence on how she handled herself and the ability to make smart decisions. A theme with Kagawa's writing is that she is not afraid to be explicitly detailed about violence and death, which I thank her for. I welcomed it with open arms because it really added to the 'realness' of the story and made me believe I was there living beside Allison in this horrible world. Also, can we just talk about Allison's katana, like damn! Fierce katana wielding vampire alert!

The romance in this novel, however, is not fierce nor alert worthy lol sorry. Kagawa KNOWS how to do romance, its pretty evident in her Iron Fey series, which were amazing btw. The romance for some people were great and yeah I guess it could be but I was so not focused on that aspect. I loved the gory, death parts and I didn't want this to be a YA paranormal love story, you know? Which btw, it wasn't! Again, there was romance but it wasn't overpowering, thank god! Zeke was the main love interest, he is, as expected, human and hates vampires. He is the only one that does accept her, even under her false pretence of being human, when everyone doesn't trust the new outsider (Allison). He really is the innocent type that had his view points about vampires turned to hatred because of his 'adopted' (?) father, Jeb. Ugh. Lets not talk about how wrong Jeb is about his perception of vampires and the world in general. Lets just say that he implements his ideas into Zeke and not in a nice way. One thing I did like about the romance aspect was that Allison wasn't whiny or consumed by her love for Zeke. Lets be honest, whiny protagonists in love are the worst! Im glad she wasn't that at all, she always had her mission at the front of her priorities, THANK YOU KAGAWA.

This is definitely a must-read and many can attest to that! Go out and buy it, please!!! 5 Stars!!!

Let me just say that, usually, I am not much of a fan of dystopian fiction.
That being said, well, I thought that The Immortal Rules was pretty good. :)
Allison Sekemoto is an interesting character. It was very curious to see how, as human, she hated vampires until the last fiber of her being but then, confronted with a certain death, she chose to be the exact same creature she most dispised in the whole world. The irony!!
And her struggle between who she was and who she is now is also very interesting to read about. Once a human who hated vampires to her very core and now a vampire, she doesn't see herself as one of the blooduckers. She keeps on dispising them therefore, she also dispises herself for being one.
I wonder if she will ever overcome her hatred.
But she didn't really think about what she was about to do when she chose to be a vampire. I mean, if it was me, I would prefer to die! Being a vampire sucks!! The constant hunger, no heartbeat, nothing ever changing, not being able to walk around during sunlight, people being afraid of you and not trusting you. And immortality! What would I do for eons and eons?? And what would I do seeing the ones I loved dying?? Ughh, it is not worth it!!
Speaking of vampires, I am totally looking forward to know more about Allie's sire, Kanin. He is such an absorbing character! He is very intriguing, indeed. Such mystery. And he seems to be so cold but then we see that that's not true. He cares for Allie. And he wants a cure to rabidism, so he also cares for the humans, *Sigh*
And, of course, I had to talk about Zeke. He is such a sweetheart. *.*
And he has seen such evil and pain...And he has a great burden to carry :( I'm so sorry for that.
I was totally pissed off when I found out that Jebbadiah hit him!! :@ Psycho old freak -.-' Who did he think he was?? -.-'
Whatever!! Well, I loved Zeke and he is always so sweet and protective and caring that I was a bit shaken up when he sent Allie away, after finding out she was a vampire. I wasn't expecting that!!
But hell, I can't judge him!! I would probably do the same. I mean, who wants a vampire around?? :/
Unless the vampire is Stefan Salvatore xD Or Lucius Vladescu xD Or Simon Lewis xD

Pretty gosh dang good. That’s what I think about this book.

Allie was such a strong character and that really pushed this book beyond its limits and created a truly epic and unique tale. Don’t let the fact it’s about vampires stray you away from this book because it was all portrayed amazingly and has forever changed my views on trying books that I’d probably avoid before even reading the blurb.

A-MAZ-ING! Gotta love it ;)
