God this book is fucking phenomenal. Very life-affirming, very emotional, very devastating, very beautiful. It ripped out my heart and broke me and then put me back together. I love it.

This book blew my mind and gave me such a comforting feeling that I haven't experienced in so long.
Those descriptions of everyday activities and hobbies made me feel right at home.

The characters were absolutely amazing, and the way they spilled their thoughts, emotions, histories, and fears made them feel like real human beings.

The different types of love explored in the book were simply beautiful. They all tangled together, evolving and surviving through the challenges of life.

I loved the inside jokes and the bursts of inspiration while they created video games. It even sparked my curiosity about video games as a new form of art.

I also absolutely loved how the story was told. It flowed so naturally, and I could easily kept up with the timeline shifts.

Amazing book, definitely never read a love story like this one before.

I was very nervous going into this book. Because it was book of the year on so many lists, I presumed it would have some sad and traumatic thing happen in it because that seems to be the case for most popular books. Light fluffy things don’t win awards. But I couldn’t find the evidence of what it could be in this book, so I went ahead and read it anyways. For anyone else like me, the big sad and tragic thing in this book is
Spoiler that a shooter comes in and kills Max and Sadie’s best friend at their workplace< / spoiler> Once that happened, I had a difficult time with the book because it was too sad.

But! I have a lot of great things to say about the book. It was absolutely GORGEOUSLY written! I have not read a book that well written in quite some time. The story floated seamlessly between time, place, and characters that feels like it should’ve been difficult to follow but it was not. The characters were all very interesting and different, both from each other and from what I’ve read before. My favorite part of the book was hearing them talk about games they were playing or making or brainstorming. That sort of creativity was so interesting and I definitely want to play these games myself!

*books that make you go play Oregon Trail* I don't even know where to begin. The characters just feel so REAL, they're messy and selfish and young and reckless and care for one another so deeply. Somehow Zevin took stubborn, uncommunicative characters and made me not want to DNF for miscommunication issues, but instead I really felt for them and what they felt like they couldn't share which in turn made them resentful and just wow. The story really puts you through your 20s and how stupid it can be, but also puts in some harsh realities that can just turn your world upside down. No need to be a gamer to really love this book, because what are games if not more storytelling. Might come back and change this to 5-stars, depending on how it sticks with me.
