As always, his books are fun to read, but this one is not in the same league as his best. "Skinny Dip" is still my favorite.

Hilarious mystery. I'm usually not a fan of action/mystery novels, but the book's vivid characters drew me in almost immediately. The plot is fast-paced with lots of eyebrow-raising (and often humorous) surprises. I'm not sure about the title, though. The monkey definitely part of the story, but it's really not vital to the plot in my opinion. The monkey is more of a humor prop than serious character. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a mystery story, but one with a cast of well-rounded and funny characters.

A cozy winding mystery, driven by bold characters and witty one liners. It’s a great palette cleanser and as is true of most other Carl Hiaasen works, Florida wildlife and ecosystems feature heavily and contribute to an overall sunny lighthearted vibe despite the mystery at the core of the story.
Generally a pretty quick read and definitely good for a mental vacation. If you want a story where the bad guys are bad, the good guys are mostly good, and ride is wild, this is a good one.

this book was interesting. i didn’t hate it. however, hiassen is a white author and one of his white characters uses the n-word. he uses it multiple times. it made me uncomfortable and i feel like a white author does not need to 1) use the n-word, 2) write white characters who use the n-word, or 3) write Black characters who say “n-word” in internal dialogue while writing the actual n-word for white characters. i feel like there is some disrespect for bahamians. i feel like there is disrespect and blatant misunderstanding of Vodou. while i liked the actual story, these things upset me enough to take my rating from what would have been a 4 or 5 stars to a 2 leaning towards 1. satire should still respect the people and cultures in use.
