This is a sweet little narrative that paints a picture of God's character through the eyes of a little mouse on a quest to seek a king's help. My girls loved it.

I was actually a little disappointed in this one. I love the Chris Tomlin song and work in kid's ministry, so I thought this would be perfect to accompany a Bible lesson on God as our Father. Haven't gotten around to giving the lesson and reading the book out loud to the kids yet, but, in reading it on my own, I was so disappointed. The hype for this was pretty huge, and it may very well be that my expectations were so high because of all of the positive feedback I was hearing. In addition, coming away from listening to 'Good, Good Father,' I was really expecting something incredible...

The pictures are cute and simple, but, honestly, I kept wishing there was more to them. And I just have to compare this to a book by Max Lucado called Just the Way You Are. Both stories are very similar, but I think that Lucado's book displays the message in a more powerful way that really hits your heart. I was expecting a little more depth to Good, Good Father. The story is super simple. For some, that will be an asset, so that you can share the story with younger readers. For others, this might not be the case. It IS a short, sweet little story, but I didn't find it particularly memorable.

There is also a Good, Good Father for Little Ones. This version that I am reviewing seems to be aimed at little ones, so I'm not sure how the other compares or how it is more suitable for even younger ages.

The irony is that this board book for toddlers has deeper and more sophisticated meaning than the lyrics of the song that inspired it. It still is weak, though. Needs to mention God more explicitly.

one of my favorite books and I'm 21 years old.
Started crying while reading this to my 22 month old child I nanny..... your child NEEDS this book.... so do you hahhahah. It shows that despite everything God CAN do for us, He just wants us. He doesn't want us to try, do, or strive to impress Him,... all He wants is you- as you are and completely transparent and intimate with Him.

An allegory, where the lion is God. Or, if you ignore the prelude from the author, a story about what makes a good dad.

At first glance I had assumed that Chris Tomlin had just paired pictures with his worship song Good Good Father, which I would have been ok with. However instead he created a beautiful story of a king who so deeply loves us and is always there. Definitely a book I’ll be reading again with kiddos as the message is beyond special.

Most of you know the song Good Good Father, sung by Chris Tomlin. Now, not only is this not only a very popular Christian song but a book as well.

Chris Tomlin and Pat Barrett, both fathers, understand the importance of imparting the characteristics of God to our children. The goal with this book is to show kids the Great love of God.

Good Good Father for Little Ones

This new children's book starts with the question, "What is a Good Good Father like?" Through the pages of this book, you will take your young children on a journey with a little bear character to discover the "job descriptions" of a good father. Each pair of pages describes one job that the Father carries out and then how it applies specifically to your child.

The drawings were cute and captured Sarabeth's attention. Sarabeth, at 2, enjoyed seeing the different roles, though I'm pretty sure the descriptions were a bit above her comprehension at this point in time.

A Few Impressions

While I found the story sweet and engaging, I finished the first reading feeling like I had missed something significant. Though the back copy of this book says straight away that "God is a good, good Father," that message is not spelled out inside the pages of the book.

I read the story a second time, again looking for how Tomlin and Barrett would connect the message of a Good Good Father specifically to God himself. But it wasn't there.

So, while this is a sweet story, there's a caveat here for me. It's going to require conversations with your children, especially young ones, to share with them how God is your Father. It may be a great way for a parent to begin explaining God's role in the life of young children. I just personally found myself wishing it was spelled out within the actual pages of this book.
