tanjiro, you absolute gem of a human being. no one could ever make me hate you.

one thing I've always loved about demon slayer is how it humanises the demons without justifying or condoning their actions, and rui is no exception. his backstory is so tragic yet so beautifully written - he's without a doubt my favourite of the lower moons.

as for the rest of this volume, there's so much this instalment does well. it's so much more well-paced than the previous volumes, and I found the dialogue a lot less awkward and the action sequences were a lot easier to follow along with. while I do think the characterisation and character development needs more work, the characters themselves are so fun and wonderful that you can't help but love them. well, most of them. those spider demons still terrify me, and my feelings about zenitsu are more mixed than positive.

I love how this story keeps building up the stakes so well. The pacing of this series is fantastic. I also greatly appreciate how the Spider Demon clan are not to be fucked with. Every time a new character was introduced, I thought that they were going to be the big baddy. I also sort of fell for the bait and switch as I did not expect Rui to be not only the strongest and leader of the clan, but as well one of the 12 Moons Demons... I thought that this introduction gave a great scope through which to see the power disparity between Tanjiro and the rest of the gang, and the ever increasing power of the demons which they encounter.
I also thought seeing a Pillar in battle was so fucking awesome as we see how truly gifted and strong they are- it shows where Tanjiro and the gang could maybe get to in the future.
I also thought that the addition of Rui's desires to have a real family and how that was perverted to the point of essentially confining the rest of the clan to fill the roles of his "family" was such a nice bit of character development. It strangely humanized this hellacious being.
