I loved X so much and how he was such a sweet prickly baby BUT th story was way too long and repetitive for what actually happened in it :/

I enjoyed it well enough and the narrator did a really great job but overall it was just ok.

Narrator: Anderson Richards

“He’d said “I stalk you” the same way another person might have said I love you.”

I enjoyed the story but found myself skimming a lot. But for some reason that don’t stop me from seeing if they would make it.

I had no idea what this book was about (I stopped reading blurbs a while back) but I was hooked from the first page. Tate was definitely annoying at times, but I absolutely loved the story.

I'm a little in awe at how much I loved this book. I was a little worried after the first few chapters that this book was going to be darker and more toxic than I was prepared to read right now, but after the two MCs meet it became apparent that was definitely not the case. I don't think I've read a better book with one MC that's such a sweet cinnamon roll and the other is such an emotionless deadly killer completely wrapped around the sweet one's finger. I only wish that this book wasn't a stand alone, because I would love to read so much more with these two characters and in this world.

Audiobook - 5+++++ stars. Anderson Richards is a new narrator to me and he killed it. Such an amazing voice performer.

Story - 4.25 dystopian stars

I ended up loving this more than I thought I would. Thank you Lyn for putting this on my radar.

The writing was solid and flowed so well, it was easy to follow and fall in love with the story.

The characters: X - OMG, I loved this shadow of a man. Mysterious, lethal and sometimes funny man. Naming a character X and making him sound like X is really amazing.

Tate - I ended up liking him eventually, he is one bubbly, foot meet mouth character. He can be annoying at times but he is alright.

The connection between the characters pulled me in. The sex was hot but at times these guys were just unbelievable.

Overall, I had fun with this dystopian story.

The first chapter made me wonder if this was going to be too dark for me, but it really wasn't dark at all after that. The escape/survival storyline was solid, and I have a weakness for that type of action plot, so I almost didn't even mind when the romance got a little silly here and there. Almost :)

I was expecting it to be undercooked in a smutty way, but it went schmoopy instead. In a book where they're killing people every time they turn around!! It didn't work so well for me, but I have a low tolerance for the "I've known you for three days, and life just isn't worth living without you" type of cheese. Stronger relationship development could have made this a pretty fun read.

DNF at 65%
I'm so disappointed. I really, really liked it until 50% when they get together and have sex for the first time. I started to get annoyed. From that point on, I felt like they acted out of character. It was all too "OMG I think I'm falling in love with my stalker/protector who's also a killer. I should really push him until he fucks me now that I've got this power over him..." I don't know... It killed the building anticipation I had for them. It was too soon.

I tried to press on. It's very rare that I DNF a book passed the 50% mark. But I was losing interest fast. And then I-love-yous were said and I rolled my eyes so hard. Cuz I could understand it when it came to X, but coming from Tate it was just... no. Like, dude, I'm okay with you crushing on him and being grateful, but you should want many more conversations with him before you think this is love.

I completely lost interest and I don't care that I don't know how it ended.

Oh well.

I wasn’t sure how this would go for me (I was afraid it’d be too dark and angsty and that’s not my thing usually) so I’m super pleased to announce: I loved it.

There’s not a ton of world building, but I honestly didn’t mind because the story is more about the relationship between X and Tate.

For me, the story was well-balanced; never veering too far into grim, sappy, boring, or horny.
