I enjoyed this book but it didn’t live up to the hype

It is now three days since I read the last line of this book - Three days since I pre-ordered book two (Reckless) and the novella (Powerful). Three days to think about how to write this review - what do you do say to a book that haunts your dreams - literally!! All I can see is what Kai will do to Paedyn....what Kitt will make him do because, like his father, he will use Kai as an extension of himself - to do all his dirty work.

So...Here it goes.

What I like about this book? Everything! It's a solid five star for me - characters, plot development, world building, tension, character growth - this book has it all and has it in abundance.

This book features a strong FMC, a protagonist Female that I hope to see meet her demise in book TWO (but undoubtedly she will somehow end up with one of the princes - just kill me now). A great set of secondary characters and support characters that you grow to love. A terrible villain support character - Ace - who gets what he deserves. Two princes, who are the MMC. One who is kind and sweet. One who has been molded into a monster of exponential proportions, the killing machine of the sadistic evil king.

Throw in a magic system where only the "Elites" are treated well, the mundanes are left to poverty and desperation and the ordinaries and Fatals are hunted down, tortured and killed and their relatives exiled into the desert without hope of survival by reaching the city on the other side.

And finally a competition that will pit all of these against one another in the midst of a rebellion rising.

What have you got? Action, love, betrayal, friendships, lost friendships, found family, enemies to almost lovers then to very much enemies once again, heart break, self-searching, truth seeking, and deciding what one believes and will hold true

And Finally - an ending that will absolutely KILL you!! UGHHHH......Lauren Roberts is now the queen of cliff hangers!! And just knowing that there will be a third makes me all knotted up knowing that if this cliff hanger was bad what will the second one be like?

Hint to reader: Just go right now and order the other two books because - you will want them when you finish.

It started off strong, but I got excessively annoyed at how the author misrepresents wolves as a species in the name of making the main character seem badass, and the plot armor of some of the characters/no actual stakes involved. Could not go on after that.

This book was really good. I loved Paedyn and Kai and I found the world to be so interesting and well though out. The storyline was amazing and I was hooked wanting to know what would happen next. For a debut novel written when the author was 17, this was incredible. I'm looking forward to continuing the series in the future!

I feel like this was trying to be like the Hunger Games except in a way that made no sense? Like okay whatever, have a competition or something to show off your powers. Fine. But there’s no reason to be killing each other?? Like WHY are ROYALS out there with slum kids killing each other and fighting for your life when there’s no rule that says only one person can live at the end? EVERYONE CAN COME HOME. It makes no sense.

That’s not the only thing that didn’t make sense, but I’m not here to go into every detail about this book. The ending sucked too, just was bad and predictable overall.

Not to mention the authors questionable take on supporting AI art. I won’t be reading the rest of this series.
