If you pick this one up thinking you’re going to get a book solely about Audrey and her experiences in the war, you’ll be disappointed. If you, like me, happen to love both Audrey and learning about the war, and are interested in seeing how all of the dots connected and affected both her and her family, you’ll be pleased. To me, this was an intimate and heartbreaking look at how the war (and her relationship with her nazi supporting mother) made her the woman she became, how it stayed with her long after it ended, and the ways trauma affect our lives.

I try to avoid books by and about famous performers’ lives but I thought I’d give this one a shot because of the WWII aspect. This book was absolutely fine.
By the synopsis, I assumed Audrey’s father was still in the home and an active Nazi, which would have made her helping the resistance a lot more exciting. I also assumed that her role in the resistance would be more involved.
This book was extremely repetitive when talking about Audrey’s life. My favorite parts were the ones not about Audrey and her family, but rather talking about the happenings in and around the area.

I did not finish this book. I found the narrative repitative and uninspiring. I felt Audrey Hepburn was tagged on to boost sales

I had a hard time at the beginning of this book because I spent too much time trying to read the Dutch names and cities. It didn't help my reading flow. To get through the book, I basically skimmed over all the Dutch names and just went into the nitty gritty part of the story. Once I did that, the book was fascinating! I love Audrey Hepburn. She was always my favorite actress. Learning about her life and her struggles during WWII was so sad and moving. I have read many Audrey Hepburn biographies. This one helped fill the gaps during the time in her life that she never really discussed. It was a very lovely book.

Fabulous book based on meticulous research (the chapter notes at the end are an additional gift!) about Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn's teen years in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands.
