This was one of the better graphic novel experiences I have had, in large part due to the beautiful colored illustrations. I have finally accepted though that graphic novels are not my favorite literary flavor. This would have been far less enjoyable if I had not already read The Game of Thrones -- I just prefer a traditional format which adds far more depth and complexity to the story than a graphic novel is able to portray.

I was genuinely really excited to start this series.
I mean, the ASOIAF series as a full-color graphic novel? How could it not be amazing? You'd obviously assume GRRM would only release the rights to a really good team with basically a perfect illustrator whom everyone can basically appreciate, right?
...Eh? 😀

When I bought the first volume, I didn't really get a full taste of what the illustration style was like before buying because I first found them for sale in an actual comic book shop and the volumes come individually sealed in plastic (because of illustrated nudity, I'd assume).

Ultimately, I just, unfortunately, ended up really disliking like the illustration style. I couldn't get past it to get into what I was reading fully.
Everybody in the novel was really, overly thick (not thicc, thick) bodied like cave man-y wide across; the fingers were weirdly thick, everyone was definitely capable of crushing a bowling ball in one of their huge hands (even women)—just everything.
Also, didn't like the faces. Made characters look somehow even more like cave people—wealthy cave people...

So, I didn't finish the first novel. Didn't get past more than a handful of chapters (I did try!), specifically because of the illustration style.

SEGUNDA LEIDA:

PRIMEDA LEIDA:

ME ENCANTO!!

I've enjoyed myself immensely with this graphic novel, although it feels more like a comic to me with how it's all visualised. Can't wait to continue with the series in this format. Haven't read the actual novels yet aside from the first book, did see the TV series adaption so I'm now planning to read the other graphic novels and someday the novels as well.

Also really liked the extra's in the end, the 'how it was made' with the doodles, the extra information by the artists etc. Really nice addition. And the fact that it's in HC gives it something extra special I think. Truly beautiful addition to my Game of Thrones collection.
