It has been a long time since I read this novel. It being one of my first Expanded Universe novels I got my hands on. My initial fascination with the Clone Wars and Prequel Era( I grew up with it) brought me to this novel.

It was also my first Luceno novel and started my connection to his writing and I have read almost every Star Wars novel he has written as he is an exceptional author.

This novel fleshes out a lot of Palpatines background as well as his masters and I am among the fans who feel that some if not all lf this novel should be brought into the new Canon somehow.

Absolute unit of a political thriller interspersed with deep dives into Sith lore and philosophy

James Luceno is a great writer. However, I do prefer the canon Padme books background for Naboo over this one's. Otherwise, a fantastic novel. I finally know the true tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise.

I found it an entertaining look at Palpatine's master, but honestly felt it just glossed over Plagueis and focused on Palpatine by about the last 2/3rds of the book. It started off well, got a bit dry in the middle, then got kind of fun as it showed the off-camera scenes of Phantom Menace. In the greater scheme of EU books, this isn't all that bad. It's well written with good characters, and a familiar backdrop. I'd still only recommend it for die-hard Star Wars fans.

Excellent book- a must read for Star Wars fans. If you're not big into Star Wars, though, I think following the trails and characters interwoven throughout would be hard. But as a big fan myself, I enjoyed this novel mostly for how it integrated so well with what I already know of the Star Wars universe. I actually want to rewatch Episode I now to spot all the scenes where I know Plagueis was lurking in the shadows. Highly recommended- 4.5 stars.

This book is all about political machinations behind the scenes of Palpatine’s rise to power, focusing more on him that on Plagueis himself. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I still really enjoyed it. I imagine I might have liked it even more had I read more of the pre-Phantom Menace EU books (as I’ve mostly focused on the New Republic Era so far). There are many references to events the I suppose are told in more detail in those books.
