Sevenwaters #4

This is a second trilogy set following the characters and world of the previous Sevenwaters Trilogy.
I almost liked this one better than the previous books. The plot was great. It is a great set up for what may come next. I just didn't feel the same connection as with previous books. I didn't feel the characters and their connections as well, but it was still good.

I love the first one. I liked that this one had more supernatural parts than a few of the others, but it still wasn't as great the fairy tale of the first one.

Dec 2022: After re-reading the first book in the Sevenwaters series for likely the third or fourth time, I decided to reread this one, my next favorite, as I have fond memories of Clodagh and Cathal. Luckily, my memory served me well. It's the fourth in the series, the start to a sort of sequel/continuation trilogy of the first three, but if you somehow stumbled your way into looking at this book and found it intriguing without reading any of the others, I think it still holds up well alone. Yes, there's some deeper mythology for the old and the family that you won't know, but the trials Clodagh must go through and the romance have all the makings of appealing to a wider audience (certainly better writing than some that get boosted into popularity).

Marillier's writing brings forth a timeless, classic fantasy world that is well-crafted in real lore / historical settings with a bit of her own enchantments. You can just feel how special the Sevenwaters family is to her and how much she must love the history and legends that she incorporates into her stories.
