"Nikolai Wroth, a ruthless vampire general, will stop at nothing to find his Bride, the one woman who can 'blood' him, making his heart beat and filling him with strength. Coldly interested only in the power his mate will bring, he can hardly believe when Myst the Coveted, his army's new immortal captive, awakens him body - and soul. Famed throughout the world as the most beautiful Valkyrie, Myst has devoted her life to protecting a magical jewel and to fighting the vampires. Wroth provides her with the perfect opportunity to torment her sworn enemy - for with his new heartbeat comes a consuming sexual desire that can only be slaked by her. Denying him, she escapes, struggling to forget his searing, possessive kiss. She eludes him for five years, but he has finally chased her to ground and stolen her enchanted jewel, giving him absolute power over her. Now that she's his for the taking, he intends to make her experience first-hand the agonizing, unending lust she subjected him to for half a decade. Yet when Nikolai realizes he wants far more than vengeance from Myst and frees her, will she come back to him?" (From Amazon)

I was not sure what to think about this novella as it gives you so little but trust me when you get to the second book (first full-length novel) this will all make sense.

This is probably the millionth time I’ve read this little novella, it instantly became a comfort reread for me, and honestly, the entire series has become one of my favorite paranormal romance series.
This is a story of forbidden love between natural enemies. Nikolai, a human-turned-vampire general who is on the lookout for his Bride, who is the one woman who can make him breathe again, make his heart beat, and make him become stronger. He’s just not expecting someone like Myst, a Valkyrian warrior to be the one. I really liked seeing these two get together. A vampire hater who is supposedly “the one” …of a vampire!!!! Nikolai is sexy, alpha, and struggling with the feelings he has for the totally zany, quirky, sassy, devious, and gorgeous Myst. I loved their interaction and their banter was an absolute laugh a minute. I love the concept of destined mates in my PNR books. I love it when the couple cannot avoid the inevitable and they are struggling with their feelings and their raising passion until they fall in love with each other.
this was also the book that introduced me to the world of Valkyrian women, who I just absolutely fell in love with. They love clothes, make-up, and bright and shiny things, and fighting, and they have the absolute best lines ever!
Fantastic dialogue, humor, lovable characters, and the zany world of the Lore that you just want more and more. Overall, this was a fantastic choice for a quick and steamy read. It was entertaining, sexy, and intriguing. I was sucked right into this story from beginning to end.

5 stars for the first 75%, but that last act conflict was aggravating to get through.

This was not my favorite in the series. I’m glad I followed the recommendation of Fated Mates podcast and didn’t start here. I think if this was my first experience it might have been DNF or 2 stars - however since I already love the universe and have a sense of a lot of the characters I enjoyed it more. I also think the experience was helped as audio - Robert Pekhoff really brings these stories to life!

The Warlord Wants Forever
3.5 Stars

Synopsis
Once a ruthless warlord and now a general in the rebel vampire army, Nikolai Wroth is shocked to discover that his Bride, the one woman who can make his heart beat again, is the incredibly beautiful but completely merciless Myst the Coveted, a Valkyrie warrior who has devoted her life to destroying vampires. Fortunately or unfortunately, Nikolai stumbles across the means to control Myst but does he want her subjugation or her love?

Review
After reading and enjoying A Hunger Like No Other, I felt that something was missing regarding Nikolai and Myst's backstory. So, I went back and read The Warlord Wants Forever even though I am not a fan of novellas because they are too short and the character development is usually meh. All in all, this does not disappoint but reading Hunger... first probably enhanced my enjoyment.

Nikolai and Myst have an intense love/hate relationship that takes some getting used to but on the whole they each give as good as they get and ultimately deserve each other. Nikolai is too domineering for my taste, and some of his actions are cringe-worthy but his character does learn an important lesson. Myst is also an ambiguous character but once everything about her past is revealed, she becomes very sympathetic. One problem with her characterization is the incongruity between her ferocity and independence and her need to submit to another in order to find true love - this does not resonate well.

The dialogue and humor are perfect in their snarkiness, and the sex scenes are steamy with a capital S but never become gratuitous.

Even though this is a novella, it does not read as one and neither the plot nor the characterization are short changed. I do, however, recommend that it be read by those who have already begun the Immortals After Dark books as I would not consider it a good introduction to the series.

Not my favourite coupling in the series. I'm glad I didn't read this first when I started the series years ago. I read A Hunger Like No Other as book one, which is the first full-length novel, and loved it. Had I started with this one I may not have continued with the series. I didn't like the fact that he could control her actions at one point. Made me uncomfortable. I would even recommend for others to do the same, and then maybe once you're into the series and have got to know and love the world and characters, you could read this one and the other novella-length one: Untouchable, featuring Murdock Wroth and Daniela, because the two stories overlap in time/scenes anyway.

So there's nothing I love more in a book than a character with a cheeky, mischievous humour. This book is probably a feminists nightmare, but like, whatever. Some people like being helpless and stuff. I thought it was great and don't care what no one thinks! Very quick read, and my first supernatural tale that had any erotic passages in it. Much better.
