SPOILERS

The only reason this got 2 stars instead of 1 is because the MMC took a bullet for the FMC. 60% of this book was back and forth about a mysterious lie that it takes forever to reveal. The MMC is beyond annoying and the FMC forgives everyone way too easily. I just can’t read these books anymore. Women letting men treat them like trash (not in a good way) and then letting them do whatever with them. There is zero self-respect. There is a way to do a bully romance but the miscommunication trope just irks my nerves. The setup of this book was almost identical to the bet. Definitely won’t be reading anymore from this series.

I hate misunderstandings. So much could have been avoided with communication.

The Dare was a first read for me from both authors. I didn't feel like I'd missed anything with this being the second book in the series and jumping into it at this point, so The Dare can be read as a complete standalone. The authors write well together, but this book overall just didn't light my happy book place up.

What exactly does that mean?

Yes, this is a bully romance, I know it's not all sunshine, giggles and rainbows. I've read this trope before, yet at the end of the reading my happy book place should be filled up with a love-hate relationship that I feel content with and lots of happy angst over how the couple arrived at their HEA. The best ones make me feel happy-angsty for days, even weeks after I've finished them and honestly I mourn the couple because I'm no longer reading about them once I have to finished the book. Sigh.

Sufficed to say, The Dare did not leave me with that feeling. Most of the time I felt the characters suffered from a whiplash of emotions, which might actually be a more honest teenage emotional landmine and not the fictional bully trope I've read. When I read I want to escape instead of facing reality. I still have teenagers at home whose moods turn on a dime, I don't look forward to reading about them.

While I love a friends to enemies to lovers theme, Vance dove too far into the dark side for my personal tastes. Ava also was a girl who took a lot of personal blame for everyone in her life upon herself. What happens to these two children were the cause of something out of their control and they basically become a sadist and masochist because of it. This isn't a theme in the story, yet they both have those tendencies and I could see that lifestyle for them in the future.  Perhaps a thought for the future as the series progresses, as these characters mature and need a place to release their emotions.

In conclusion, The Dare just didn't personally hit my happy spot, but the authors are well written and I would read them again.

Anyway, Vance and Ava are childhood friends. They love playing the game of Truth or Dare. One night this game leads to the course of changing their future forever. Five years later, their parents are getting remarried, to each other, and Ava is moving in to Vance's mansion. She has no where else to go.

Ava's father is in rehab, she is beginning college and moving in with her newly married mother is the only smart choice. However, Vance hates his ex-best-friend. He blames her for ending his parents marriage and for what has happened in his life for the past five years.

Ava has no idea what Vance has been up to since they moved away five years ago and her parents got divorced. She has no idea that he hates her guts and that he now has set out to ruin her life. They were once best friends, but things change.

Truth or Dare, which would you pick?

Prepare to be spitting mad and have your heart ripped out at the same time. Loved this book even though it made me want to throw my kindle across the room a few times while fighting the desire to throat punch Vance. 😂❤️🔥🤬

Ava and Vance were once childhood friends until the mistakes of their parents tore them apart. Years later, Ava’s mom and Vance’s dad get married which brings Ava back into Vance’s life. She looks forward to seeing her old friend, but she doesn’t get the friendly reception she expected. Actually he was cruel and mean. Vance is convinced that Ava is liar who caused the collapse of his parents marriage, and he’s ready to make her pay.

—the audiobook for this series so far has been entertaining. They’re pretty quick books but still have decent character development and different enough plots to keep their stories separate.

Another great book by JL Beck & C Hallman. Loved the angst between Ava & Vance! Lots of Steamy moments as well. I highly recommend you read this book! I loved Ava Lucas & Teddy Hamilton's narration as well!

If you had read book one in this series, The Bet, then you would know Vance had an appearance at the end of that story. I was intrigued and couldn't wait to read his book after reading its excerpt.

So, Vance and Ava are friends during their middle school. After Vance's father lost his job, they were offered to live with Ava's family. They grew more closer and a budding attraction started. But a night of Truth or Dare game crashed their lives and got them separated. Five years later, Ava went back to the town where all her heartache started to live with her mother and her new husband, Vance's father. She didn't know what to expect of seeing her old friend during their parents' wedding, but it was certainly not the hatred he was throwing at her.

Vance is a freaking asshole. There was a scene in this story that I have the strongest urge to leap inside the book and smack the hell out of him. I knew that what he was doing was a revenge to what he perceived as a betrayal of Ava. His need to humiliate and intimidate her was so strong, but it didn't make my urge to hit him any less. He was really bad with Ava but he also couldn't deny what he feels for her.

I would describe Ava's character as a forgiving person. Even after what her mother did, she still tries to be understanding and seeks her affection (although it was obvious to me that it was a lost cause). She tried to give hell back as much as she can to every mean things that Vance did but, when it comes to the person she loves, she forgives them easily. I think it goes down to her craving to be loved by those people she cares about: a drunk father, a selfish mother and the boy who hates her.

The Dare is a stepbrother/bully romance, with angst, enough drama, revenge, sexy scenes all thrown in, but a little bit milder version of the previous book in this series, in my opinion.

Overall, I enjoyed it, loved it, went crazy over it and looking forward to reading the next book! Another great read from these amazing authors!

: I received an ARC from Facebook but am leaving an honest and voluntary review :

If you dig bully romance then this book is a definite must read.
So much anger, lust and drama!

I was a little hesitant to read it, as I hadn't read The Bet but I needn't have worried as it reads great as a standalone.
