3.5 stars to The Spirit, an awesome and fitting end to the first round of Valancourt's Paperbacks From Hell publishing venture. Finding a good Bigfoot novel is not so easy. Many devolve into lunacy or idiocy to rapidly as to be unreadable. Thomas Page has a pretty cool take on the hunt for Bigfoot, comparing it to both Native American interpretations of spirit quests and a 1970's American version that captures the feel of the post-war, pos-60's, consumerism-is-all-that's-left-for-us late '70s/early '80s USA. Really enjoyed this one, and I absolutely adored the ending. Slightly disappointed that Bigfoot is a murderous beast, but these ones have good reasons. Fantastic summer read, so jump on it while you can!

2024: A Year in Paperback Hell

Not the best but these are not meant to be highbrow literature or even the best horror. Still, they’re the books I grew up on and made me the horror fan I am today. Please, if you read these, just take into consideration the time in which they were written and don’t force your modern sensibilities down my throat.

I have not read a lot of Bigfoot novels (with the exception of the juvenile one I read a couple of weeks ago), but having read Grady Hendrix's forward to this book, I think this is probably the best one! It's a bit silly, there isn't a *ton* of character development, and I found Raymond Jason profoundly irritating. But it was a quick read, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Eh, this was okay. I mean, it's a Bigfoot novel, so it was only ever going to be so good. If anything, I'm surprised at the fact that I didn't hate it. It was just average in every way. Definitely my least favorite of the Paperbacks from Hell re-releases.

I never thought I would ever read a Bigfoot book let alone enjoy it but The Spirit is a thrilling read. Parts Jack London, parts Old Man and the Sea, but with Bigfoot. Sadly marred by 1970s racism and sexism which was probably viewed as progressive at the time. It’s still worth reading with context and awareness.
