An evocative account of Slater's childhood. A journey through food with an undercurrent of growning up and sexual awakening. He made me smile, he made me cry and all in all he made me very hungry!

He has all the right words to write about food — you can see, smell, taste and feel everything. Telling the story of his childhood through memorable meals and snacks is genius.

Without a doubt, Nigel Slater is one of my most favourite, beloved food writers (or really writer of any kind). No one talks about food with the same degree of love, compassion, nostalgia and respect. This memoir of his early life and movement towards a better way of eating was as welcome as hot tea and biscuits on a rainy day. Love, love, love.
