Essa é a segunda vez que chego cheia de preconceitos num livro da Penelope Ward e acabo quebrando a cara. A princípio, a ideia de "Stepbrother Dearest" me parecia bem boba. Achei que autora tinha apenas pego um tema considerado taboo para escrever uma história erótica, atraindo assim a atenção de pessoas que se ligam nessas coisas. Mas, não. Na verdade, o livro tem elementos muito mais profundos. Uma amiga me recomendou MUITO, então resolvi dar uma chance. E ela tinha razão.
O livro é dividido em duas partes. Na primeira, Elec e Greta são apenas adolescentes. Sarah (mãe de Greta) já era casada com Randy (pai de Elec) há algum tempo, mas até então elas ainda não conheciam o filho dele. Quando Pilar (a ex-mulher) consegue um emprego em Londres, recebem a notícia que o garoto iria morar com eles. Num primeiro momento, o clima não foi nada bom. Elec chegou disposto a fazer da vida de Greta um inferno, pois de certa forma sentia que estava vingando sua mãe fazendo assim. Porém, com o tempo, eles percebem que tem muito mais afinidades do que diferenças. Eu acho importante dizer também que em nenhum momento eles se viram como irmãos de verdade. Desde que o viu pela primeira vez, Greta já sentiu uma atração e não conseguiu levar a sério esse papo de "meio-irmão". Embora o Elec se comporte de forma protetora em relação a ela, nunca foi com olhos de irmão. Sempre fica muito claro pro leitor que esses dois se gostam e que só não estão fazendo nada além porque a situação é esquisita.
Aos poucos, conhecemos de fato os pensamentos e os sentimentos das personagens. Entendemos o porquê de tudo. Ao contrário do que muita gente pensa, o livro é muito mais sobre o lado emocional deles do que o físico. E tem muuuuita bagagem emocional, principalmente do lado dele.
Na segunda parte, eles se reencontram sete anos depois. Muita coisa aconteceu em suas vidas: trabalho, mudanças, relacionamentos... Mas uma coisa permanece exatamente como antes. E isso é tudo que dá pra dizer.
A única coisa que me incomodou um pouco foi {ALERTA DE SPOILER} o fato de que na parte em que ela está lendo o livro dele, nós acabamos tendo que ler de novo tudo exatamente como aconteceu. Muitas páginas podiam ter sido poupadas, ou então talvez escritas de outra forma, não tão palavra por palavra. Talvez eu tenha me irritado com isso pois li esses segmentos no mesmo dia. Talvez, pra quem demora mais pra ler seja até bom que tenha como relembrar e ver o que ele sentiu de fato em cada frase. Mas, enfim, eu achei essa parte meio repetitiva.
Recomendo a leitura pra quem gosta de romance clichezinho e tá precisando sair de uma ressaca literária.

I loved this book . And the final I don't have words for it . I would really like to read the Lucky book too .

I actually liked the story. I always had a penchant for almost incestuous stories.
Greta as a character grew close to me and all of her words were heart-wrenching. I even remember crying for her when she found out that Elec had a girlfriend. I could feel her pain here on the other side and that was rare for me.
I somewhat found myself wanting to strangle Elec. For playing with two women's hearts. For being an indecisive jackass. For letting Greta hope. For Greta's seven-year heartbreak. For not giving her closure.
The story kept a very nice pace and there was no dull moment for me. In the first half, that is.
But I intensely disliked the part where Elec sent Greta a story where everything that happened was narrated in his POV. It was as if I was reading a novella inside a novel and that didn't bode well with me.
Also, Elec's break up with his girlfriend was marginalized. I mean, he was about to propose to her, for fuck's sake. I was expecting something more from that but no, everything went fine and they still lived happily ever after.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate happy endings. However, Elec's supposed to be fiancee was really nice and I was pretty sure what he did hurt her so much. And technically, he was cheating on her when he admitted that he loved them both. (And infidelity is something I loathe.) I felt that they, Greta and Elec, should pay for the heartbreak they caused and I wanted them to have a hard time getting back together but then they did. Easily. And I was disappointed about it.

I really enjoyed this story but I don't think we really saw much of a relationship develop and the second half was a bit of a recap more than new aspects of the story so I'm giving it 3-stars.

I didn't love reading from Elec's point of view because it seemed like the story was just being repeated with a little bit of insight. Overall though it was a story that kept me hooked.

This just didn't work for me. The development of the characters and the plot were too fast paced and hurried. The writing was choppy and the speech was horrible. Didn't flow for me :(
