The Fox and The Hound by Daniel P. Mannix

Brutal naturalistic story that differs completely from its Disney counterpart. I liked both, but Disney absolutely lost the core of what Mannix was going for in writing this.
I viewed Copper and his masters feud with Tod as a microcosm of the story at large. They play the part of man in opposition to Tod’s nature, and I enjoyed seeing that play out, however dark it got. I loved that the ending came from the perspective of Copper and almost devalued Tod’s death, as I think that is very akin to how we view our own war against the aspects of nature we don’t play kindly with.

Wow…it’s been awhile since I’ve cried because of a book but oh my…those last few chapters where heart-wrenching. It was such a fascinating book to read, and I so enjoyed this gut-wrenching, yet truthful and beautifully written telling of a story between a fox and a hound.

This was an interesting take on seeing the world from an animalistic perspective. Written a while ago, during a time when animals were believed to be completely colorblind, it was fascinating to read. Definitely a lot more 'natural' than the Disney film with so many, many deaths.

This is one of my favorite Disney movies, BUT THIS BOOK IS NO DISNEY MOVIE! I didn’t think the story could get sadder, but oh, it can. Get the tissues ready.

Nevertheless, this is a truly spectacular piece of xenofiction. Despite the potential for anthropomorphism, the author automatically thrusts you in the POV of both the fox and the hound. Both of whom have unique personalities and voices as they battle over the years. I did have more of a fondness for Tod’s chapters though.

Overall, did I still love this story and its superb nature prose? Yes. Will I read it again anytime soon? Nope nope nope, I don’t want this hurt again
