I wasn't connecting with the characters like I wanted to. Maybe if I was reading instead of listening to the book it would have hit different, but 1/3 of the way in and there has been almost no plot. So more of a slow, episodic, picture painting kind of story than a plot driven one

Butter Honey Pig Bread is a story about twin sisters, Kehinde and Taiye, and their mother, Kambirinachi, and choices and their consequences after Kehinde experiences trauma caused by

as a young girl.

The story is full of diversity and queer love, however the representation seemed a little ham-fisted, though that could have been from the way this editon was narrated. Overall, I struggled with how this book leans towards prescriptive "tell" rather than "show" tactics, and overall I found it often trying too hard. However, it was a refreshing piece of representation in literature.

This was the most breathtaking writing ive read in awhile. The style is so sensual and delicious, quite literally, with all the emphasis on food. I love how food played a huge part in the novel, manifested in different forms of hunger / desire / loneliness. I adore Taiye’ character so so much. I only wish we got a bit more of Kehinde’s story and the mother’s, I felt there were some loose ends with them (I wanted to see more of her relationship with Farouq and her past). Actually so beautiful and gorgeous overall.

I grabbed this at random from a list on Libby and I'm so glad I did. The writing was absolutely beautiful - the descriptions were detailed and everything felt so real. I really enjoyed the characters and their journeys, although sometimes things felt a bit disjointed. I find that can happen with books that move through time, so I think it's more of a critique of the style than this specific book. Ekwuyasi has a gift for describing food and honestly all I wanted to do was eat - her descriptions made everything sound wonderful.

absolutely a new favourite book!! everything about this is just so   perfectly crafted. the descriptions of food and setting were lush, the stylistic choices about perspective were so smart, the writing tackled huge themes (motherhood! sisterhood! familial trauma! loneliness! friendship! grief!) in the most natural way.

the interconnectedness and tenderness of these stories is endlessly special and cathartic!! i need another book from francesca ekwuyasi asap
