This was an emotional, raw story of a family and how they move through trauma they have faced. The writing was really beautiful and I loved how they used food to illustrate the emotions and situations in the story. I loved the diverse queer cast in this story and my favorite character was probably Taiye. This book reminded me of "Girl, Woman, Other" which is another great book. I loved watching the characters unpack their own trauma through reconnecting with their family. This book has a lot of insight in the ways in which everyone carries their trauma with them, and how it informs our different perspectives.

sometimes i swear the universe gives you things you need sometimes, and this book feels like it was much needed for me (i found it searching through available ebooks on Libby)

this is a novel about trauma, family, friends, myth/spirituality, history, and healing - especially about healing, even if that healing takes time (and a lot of it) or support from those around you

it is heavy in some ways, but light in other distinct ways - would definitely recommend

I wasn't connecting with the characters like I wanted to. Maybe if I was reading instead of listening to the book it would have hit different, but 1/3 of the way in and there has been almost no plot. So more of a slow, episodic, picture painting kind of story than a plot driven one
