Mind the content warnings!!!

I couldn't put this book down. I needed to know what happened. It is not because of scandalous intrique (see the content warnings as soon as you Google it) but because the author did a great job making the characters seem so real. This book is told through the perspective of one of four children locked in a wing of their grandparents house for a long time through odd circumstances. Yes, it has a lot of wild hooks, but I think the point of this horror story is to show how witches and villains from fairy tales can exist in our world, and for trivial reasons. The book also bears a big warning for how religious zealotry and trauma can mess up a family for generations to come.

Utterly heartbreaking and truly disturbing.

I decided to read this book because i’m a big fan of Nicole Dollanganger and i know she takes a lot of inspiration from this series. I knew what to expect when going into this, but it didn’t make it any less horrific. I didn’t, however, anticipate this to be so sad. I ended up feeling really connected to the characters by the end, and Cory’s death made me cry.

I think this book can go in the same category as Lolita, they’re both beautifully written but contain dark content

Basically a narrative of many types of child abuse, in graphic detail. No actual plot, no character growth, not even exceptional writing - just misery and terror. Not apt for children. I would never recommend this series to anyone.

I liked this so much more than I thought I would! Once the time started picking up in the book, I was truly captivated and wanted to know how it ended! I'm excited to read the rest of the series !

Well, that was truly something huh. Not sure how I'll melt that but I'm glad I picked it up. One twisted telling of a seemingly perfect family that implodes the moment the Father falls into the hands of death. A lot of topics that aren't easy to melt are delt with in this book, what about child abuse and gaslighting, incest born children doing incesty things, kids being deprived from the contact of other human beings aside from their siblings and their grandmother, as well as an occasional visit from their fairly narcissistic mother. Definitely as horrid as been told.
