Growing up in a household with one parent a native English speaker and one parent a native Spanish speaker, this book hit close to home on so many levels. As I read, I found myself nodding along in agreement, chuckling at the situations I'd experienced myself, and really reflecting and rethinking many of my life experiences and thoughts around bilingualism.
This book is an important read for everyone, but I think if you are from a family background in which at least one member of your family is a non-native speaker, you'll get a bit more out of the reading experience. I'm sure this book will resonate with you on a deeper level, and more than that, it will clear away many of the misconceptions you may have about bilingualism. I'm grateful to Francois Grosjean for writing this book, I found it truly enriching.

El mejor que he leído hasta el momento sobre bilingüismo y educación bilingüe. A los padres que se planteen una educación bilingüe (incluso los no nativos como nosotros) les recomiendo el resumen que François Grosjean ha colgado en link: su página web.

تعرض التبديل اللغوي لكثير من النقد، ليس من الأشخاص الأحاديي اللغة فقط، لكنْ من بعض الأشخاص الثنائيي اللغة أيضًا؛ فيشعر كثير من الناس أنه يُنتِج مزيجًا مستهجنًا من اللغات على يد أشخاص يتحدثون بعدم اكتراث"
منذ بضع سنوات، اكتشفت جمال الإنجليزية، وأعطيتها اهتمامًا أكبر في القراءة أولًا، والدراسة ثانيًا، ولكن مع مرور الوقت، وجدتها تدخل في حديثي أكثر ممّا تعمّدت، حاكمت نفسي أحيانًا، وحوكمت أخرى، بفقدان 'انتمائي' أو تصرّفي بفوقيّة، رغم أنّ الأمر لا يعدو كونه بحثًا عن المعنى الأوضح أو الأسرع، ولا ينفي هذا إعجابي المتزايد باللغات، والتواصل غير المشروط بحواجز اللغة، ورؤية العالم الواسع، مع تقديري المتزايد أيضًا لخلفيتي الثقافية واللغوية.
"يستخدم الأشخاص الثنائيو اللغة آليةَ التبديل اللغوي لعدة أسباب. يتمثَّل أحد الأسباب الرئيسية في أنه يُفضَّل ببساطة التعبير عن أفكار أو مفاهيم معينة باللغة الأخرى (فهم يبحثون عن le mot juste أو «الكلمة المناسبة» كما يُقال في اللغة الفرنسية."

as a bilingual, this was actually super interesting. read this for my second language acquisition class - but there is little to no jargon in this, so i recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about bilingualism.
