I really wanted to like this book!!! I loved the Guatemalan references & all about Maya’s family background experiences.
However…it was confusing and some parts kept me waiting for more…more suspense…more creepiness…but never happened.
It was ok.
Creepy guy hypnotizing people and doing weird stuff. Maybe you do like it.
Let me know.

Page turner. Fast read. Nothing crazy but I thought it was a creative plot. Moved a little slow once the hypnosis piece fell into place.

I pretty much loved this. It was a slow build for me, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop. I had NO IDEA where this was going with how the mysterious deaths actually happened, and once that gradually starts to be revealed, it was fascinating in such a creepy way. The entire story of Frank was full of super high creep factor and ick. I think anyone who's ever been a teen girl will be able to relate in some way to Maya's experiences as a teenager and falling for Frank despite all the red flags and warning bells. I now can't wait to read more from Ana Reyes!

Beautifully written but the ending fell flat for me. A lot of buildup for no real conclusion I guess

To be honest, I really could give this 1 star, but there are moments that make you want to find out what’s happening. The constant pattern of “every other” chapter being in present and one being in past was extremely annoying to me. This book made me angry because of how terribly written, drawn out, and boring it was. The twist was really mediocre, and I found myself really skimming the second half, because it wasn’t worth my time!

Plot kept me guessing. Murder by hypnosis? A little far fetched...

Content warning: alcohol abuse, drug dependence, murder

The story relies on the klonopin withdrawal of the protagonist to teeter on the seesaw of reliable/unreliable narrator. Was invested in finishing because of the descriptions of settings (well-grounded in Western MA and the BU/LSU dreams) and wanting closure on memory retrieval, but pace of ending didn't match the rest of the journey and felt lacking.

This is one fantastic mystery with a drawn-out lead-up to a very unique twist. Once this was exposed, so much clicked into place. I was simultaneously excited and afraid for how it would all play out. I experienced much anxiety while contemplating what I thought I knew, rethinking the implications, and as I fretted about the outcome. A 5 star #mustread recommendation.

I'm excited for more from this debut author.

I liked the beginning and middle but the ending did not satisfy. Too much left unresolved.
