"I've spent a lot of time trying not to be weak....But I am tired-so tired-of pretending not to be weak."

Learning to live has taken me through Terryl Givens, Mary Oliver, Marilynne Robinson, and I can't help but feel it's culminating here with this book. (4/5)

I genuinely did not get a thing out of this. Not sure if that’s my fault or the book’s. Probably both.

I'm a fan of Miller's work, even though I often find myself resistant to something in his Buddhist-inflected, Pauline vision of Mormonism (I'm not quite sure what, but I think it's the insistence on submission, which may be my pride or a different fundamental framework). Regardless, I find value in reading Adam's thoughts and wrestling with them.

This is no different.

In addition to the usual Eastern-inflections of Adam's work, I couldn't help but think of Christian Wiman as I was reading this. There's also some compelling and strange crossover with atheistic arguments about meaning in life to the way that Adam talks about the need to die before death so that we can live.

Compelling work once again from Adam. Recommend for those seeking a thoughtful blend of practical and intellectual insights to the life of a disciple. Adam's work is rooted in the way that he lives as a disciple, but may still be more academic than some are drawn to. As a person who spends much of his time in thought, I appreciate Adam's approach, but recognize that it may feel too "deep" or something to others. Anyway. For those that like their discipleship to be somewhat intellectual, but also practical, this is for you.

This book was fascinating! I know that as we choose to live in Christ, we can learn to live with care and not become slaves to time. I wanted to read even more, especially more about what living in Christ may look like with the ideas shared. This was a really good book.

A good book--Miller's writing is beautiful as always. But too short! Miller raises a number of quite interesting ideas, but then will spend only a paragraph or two on each. Hoping that in the future Miller might write a book longer than 200 pages :-)

I am always so touched by Miller's ideas about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here he examines how we can live in Christ in the present moment. Lots of ideas here. I read it fast the first time but will be soaking it up again more slowly.
