A heartbreaking novel about family dynamics, love/lies and our connection with those in our life. I listened to the audiobook and it is one narrator vs. multiple for the multiple POV. The pace of this novel is very slow and is more character driven than plot driven, however I felt that this was more of an emotional read so that was OK.  The title and genre this is shelved under are misleading; this is not a romance but more literary fiction so just set your expectations accordingly.

When Mr. Chetan was murdered, I was in shock for a few chapters, especially after learning how it happened. I loved his character and his relationship with all the main characters (Betty and Solo). Solo got on my nerves for most of the book but I can feel for why he felt the need to leave Trinidad and find a place for himself in the world. I loved Betty and how “new school” she was in a way. Her and Mr. Chetan’s relationship throughout the years was beautiful and heartbreaking to experience at times, but loving all the while. Not manny being married in the beginning when Mr. Chetan first found him. Betty calling Solo and talking to him after his suicide attempt made me tear up. The way Mr. Chetan was nurseries, being stabbed 48 times and the people wrote gay on the bedroom wall and carved girl on his back…hell for those people for real. Betty’s story with domestic violence and still loving her husband even after she killed him felt very realistic cuz clearly she loved him at first for a reason like she said, I wish solo realized sooner rather than later that Betty was trying to protect him more than she was ever trying to protect herself.

Though it had a slow start, "Love After Love" surprised me by how deeply it moved me by the end. The novel paints a vivid picture of life in Trinidad, with an unconventional family and flawed, yet relatable, characters.

I truly enjoyed this book. The dynamics of relationships, the ups and downs were vibrantly displayed.

A beautiful story about family and friendship. I cried and smiled it was just perfect. I learnt so much about Trini culture and will pick up anything Ingrid Persaud writes in the future with no hesitation.
