I enjoyed the themes of motherhood/class/race that plainly interacted in all the characters lives, whether they were aware or not. Felt like the fire didn’t tie into the story as much as I would have thought.

Interesting, but it felt like Ng created a complex conflict and then couldn't really figure out a good way to solve it. The scattered focus on each character took a while to get used to, but ultimately worked in my opinion. The themes of motherhood interlaced in so many different ways throughout is what saved the book from its own ending, which was very dissatisfying.

what i loved most about this book was how real the author made the emotions feel while i was reading it.. even on both sides of the major argument that centers the major conflict, you can certainly see and feel for both sides even if you know which one you would choose. the characters all had a depth and a certain life to them that made this a really powerful read

What a great novel, that’s so multi-layered and rich with backstories for each of the main characters and which helps you understand why they ended up the way they did and what lead them to those decisions. It’s a story led by strong women characters who you might not always agree with their choices, but you understand why they made them.
