the first 2 chapters were really good and the last 2 chapters were really good. most of the chapters in between were long and boring. overall not my favorite book. not a fan of mal, alina is pretty cool, and nikolai is my favorite. (2.5)

Wow wow wow!! I have all the thoughts/feelings and just need a second to process everything that just happened. What a wild ride! Excited for book 3!

i finally finished this book and the only positive was nikolai (best character by a mile) <33
having loved the first book i was kind of disappointed at how slow this was. the first 100 pages were very boring but it did pick up after that. maybe i would’ve preferred this having watched the series first, i don’t know but it just didn’t work for me. mal went from slightly annoying in book 1 to extremely annoying and i just couldn’t stand him.
anyway thank you again nikolai for carrying this book!!

I liked the concept of the book a lot and how interconnected it was at the beginning, but it kind of fell apart after the hundred page mark. It moved way too fast at the beginning and I feel like if there was more of a buildup to the entire darkling kidnapping alina again situation, it would have been better. Especially during the part where they found and captured the sea whip. (That felt way too rushed; pretty sure it happened in one or two chapters.) In my opinion, that was the probably the climax of the story. This book didn’t really have a plot, and most of it was kind of irrelevant BUT I loved Nikolai a lot. Not that excited to read the third book, but I will just to get some closure. (And maybe because I really want to start six of crows)
