Book five of the ongoing supernatural spy series, and a good read. In this outing, the Drood family faces a resurgent Satanist conspiracy. Yes, Satanist, as in devil worshippers who revel in human sacrifices. Ongoing traitors in the Drood family continually hamper Eddie and his family as they try to wipe out this new conspiracy, and their mysterious Grand Sacrifice. A lot of twists and turns along the way, including some unexpected and terribly poignant sacrifices among the Drood. Along the way, Eddie comes face-to-face with the realization that sometimes his motives are not amongst the purest, and put his own soul in jeopardy. My only disappointment is that one of the betrayers is telegraphed fairly early and obviously, and I wanted to hit Eddie upside the head to warn him of the impending knife in the back. And just as in the previous book, the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, leading directly (one hopes) into the next book. This was a great book. It moves along at a fast pace and always has something new going on. I always look forward to checking in to Eddie's world and seeing what insane challenges he's up against. I feel the story was resolved well, and the cliffhanger ending was impressive. I had no idea it would end like that and was suitably surprised when it happened.
Anyone who is already a fan should definitely pick this one up. For newer fans I would suggest starting with the beginning so you can see the character arcs and understand prior histories and grudges.

As is typical of books in this series, the story was engaging from the very beginning, and Green does a masterful job of combining urban fantasy with horror. That being said, I did have a few issues with this book, which is why I gave it a lower rating than normal for this series. Something about this book lacks the same magic that was present in the previous installments in the series. I can't quite put my finger on what the difference between the different books is. The story had an odd flow to it, some of the jokes (while funny the first time) started to feel a bit repetitive as the story progressed. I don't know if it's repetitive in this book, or over the series or over the authors larger body of work.

Not bad. I prefer the Nightside books, but this ended on a great cliffhanger and I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series. As this series develops, Green is finding his rhythm. I'm a little tired of the "nothing can stop me because I have magic armor so I'm just going to stomp my way through situations". Eddie Drood has the potential to be so much more. I hope Green allows him to be that.

Plot summary: There's a Satanist conspiracy afoot, and it's up to Eddie Drood to find out who's responsible. There's just one small problem: Eddie's dead.
Thoughts: It was enjoyable enough. Pretty much a standard addition to the series - there's a bad thing, Eddie and Molly find out who's responsible, something goes horribly wrong, a minor character dies in a rather horrific way, Eddie and Molly stop the evil plot and kill those responsible.
So yes, having read them all back to back, they're starting to seem a little formulaic. That said, there were several plot twists in this that added nicely to the story, and it will be very interesting to see where the series goes as a result of these. There's one piece of technology in particular () that I'll be glad to see the back of. Where in the beginning it was a nifty little toy, in recent books it's become a deus ex machina. Its absence in future volumes will be a welcome change.

Usually I enjoy Nightside more than Secret History, but this time Eddie Drood kept me reading till 3am because I wanted to see if I'd worked out "whodunit". I was right :) I have to say I didn't see who the entity in the library was before hand though!
