I first read this probably as a teenager.
This re-read was really pleasant, I loved it. I’m bumping it up from 4 stars to 5 stars but with the note that obviously the portrayal of the indigenous people is dated and racist. That’s the only weak point I could see.
The ending is certainly sad and bittersweet. “Tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy”
“All children, except one, grow up.”

It's a bit boring and dated, didn't age all that well. I'll come back to it eventually but right now it's coming off as a slog.

This story makes me so incredibly sad, no matter what form I see it in. Movies, books, or otherwise. But that never stops it from being my favorite story of all time. I always know the tears will come at the end, but the adventure is so great that I can't resist. I become so invested in this story that I still clap my hands to ensure Tinker Bell lives. I cheer and crow for Peter. The way this story is written is unlike anything else, J.M. Barrie is ever present and includes himself as well as the reader in the story. I just love that. I'll never really grow up and I prefer it that way. Peter represents a life I'd love to have and for that my window will always stay open... metaphorically. I'd rather not have bugs flying in my room, thanks. And maybe my obsession for all things Peter Pan and Neverland makes me naive and immature and bias. So be it.

This book is imaginative and fun; it encapsulates brilliantly the world of childhood. It is also full of racism, sexism, and imperialism. A "product of its time", no doubt. But hard to read some parts through 21st Century eyes.

2.5? I adore Peter Pan but if I were to read this book never having heard of the story before I probably would hate it.

Peter Pan being one of my all time favorite stories, I knew I had to read the original.
Such a tragic yet beautiful story. What makes it tragic is the many different ways you can interpret the story. Of course you can interpret it the way it is written, that Peter is merely a magical kid who takes kids to a magical place. Or you can think of it all as a metaphor for death. I prefer the first version because the second version is a bit too sad for me.
But then what makes it so beautiful is the nostalgic feel of it all. Also, I love how much emphasis is put on how the parents feel when their children are suddenly missing. This part is neglected in the Disney retelling, probably because it is really sad.
Lastly, Barrie’s writing style is so poetic. I found myself highlighting so many lines in my kindle. The story moves viewpoints a lot, which can get confusing, but the beautiful story and writing make up for it.
It’s fascinating how this man came up with such a complex story and such defined characters. Every little thing was full of detail. Even how a fairy is born is thrown into the story.
I cannot wait to read this to my kids!

I loveeee a Peter Pan but before today I hadn’t ever read the book. It was nice to see where liberties were taken in some of my favorite movie renditions of this story. This is a classic.

An all-time favorite story. I have so much love for the world of Peter Pan and all its quirky characters. Rereading this book is like coming home.
