In my ongoing quest to find the perfect book for my niece, a friend recommended this one. I always read books I send her first to make sure my brother will be comfortable with them. Miy niece is a bit young to understand racism, so I’ll save this one maybe for next year. It was really well written, historically sensitive, had a great central character in Hanna, and captured the Little House on the Prairie feel very well. Hanna is shaped by her past in how she deals with the present and how she thinks about her future. I only wish she and her dad could’ve had a relationship of better ease.

Really enjoyed the author's note. Will be reading this with my children.

I delayed reading this because of my issues with Laura Ingalls, and that was a mistake. This is a perfectly charming, wonderfully intuitive and loving depiction of a kid living a really hard life, surrounded by prejudice, and (mostly) undaunted. A book I think would be helpful for almost everybody to read, and also fun and easy to read.

This was a read aloud with my kids for homeschool, ages 10 and 13.

They weren’t crazy about the story, but lately they haven’t been really into realistic fiction much (especially historical). Still, we liked seeing Hanna get her relatively happy ending. I loved all the different characters and seeing how they interact with each other. There really was a lot of development on that front in just your average length middle grade novel. I thought the place and time was portrayed fairly realistically as well. I think I would have liked to see more from Sam. I haven’t yet encountered much in the way of sweet young romance yet in our read-alouds, and I have a feeling we might be getting close to that interest setting in at home.
