I was hoping for another Intimacies :(. Seemed slow and maybe it could be the right book with the right mindset but it wasn’t it for me.

i was entertained, if only for the fact that i wanted to know where the protagonist’s uncertainty was going to lead. life laughs in our face sometimes, that much is true after reading this. plans can always be thrown into havoc; another reminder to live life purposefully and without words unspoken between people.

Much like the fact that many books that grapple with death and dying are actually about life, this book that explores separation, infidelity and divorce is actually about marriage. I savoured Kitamura's slow-burning approach and detached writing style. This book is definitely not a thriller though she does play with tropes from that genre. I was quietly enraptured.

The book seemed beige. The writing style, characters, scenery seemed to lack life and color. Some interesting topics touched upon such as professional grievers, fidelity, translators and relationships.

3.5 stars. Well written, but the (intentionally) remote style made it very difficult for me to fully engage with this one. Still an interesting read, though.

A beautiful, almost poetic look at a marriage falling apart. Almost entirely internal from the point of view of an unnamed character, A Separation took a while to get going but got its hooks deep in me before long. Every line, every character, every image feels completely deliberate in a lovely way. A Separation is a bit of a slow burn but totally worth it.
