Hailey Tarbell is counting the days until she is 18 so she can leave everything and everyone (except Chub) in Gypsum behind. But when her aunt (who she had no idea existed) shows up, Hailey learns things that turn her world upside down...

****NOTE: If you're looking for a book full of romance, this book is definitely not for you.****

I liked the fact that Hailey isn't immediately thrown into a relationship. You get to know Hailey and you aren't constantly wondering about her relationship with Kaz (who I'm pretty sure is going to be her love interest) and what's going to happen with them. Don't get me wrong, the books I read usually have to have at least some kind of romance in them, but for this book, it works.

I love, love, love Chub! He is completely adorable! I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about his background.

Healers. Irish legends. Secret experiments. Zombies. Fights. Long-lost relatives. Romantic interests. Am I the only one who sees this book as a really bad attempt at a James Patterson novel? So much about this book bugged me!

This is a kick ass, action packed adventure story that manages to tie together old lore with modern times in a really unique way. I needed a book like this. Hailey's come into a power that is ancient, and she is a strong, strong character who is in a bad, bad situation. Added to her own plight is the care of her four year old foster brother, Chub, who is just adorable.
Hailey's Aunt Prairie has just popped out from the past, and Prairie is bringing up some bad juju. All of this is on the back cover-I'm not giving anything away here.

If you are looking for something with great characters, massive amounts of action, and hot Polish guys, this is the book for you. I cannot wait to read the companion novel (I wonder why it is not a sequel?), Unforsaken.

This started out well enough, but I didn't buy into the telling. Something just felt...absent? It had all the elements of a winner for me, including some messed up family history and backstory. But the pacing dragged, with some things glaringly obvious to me as the reader that took Hailey forever to figure out. I don't usually mind, when it progresses the plot, but some things dragged out much longer than they should have.
And for all that I enjoyed the twists and turns of the book, the way information was delivered seemed to give it the least impact possible. Again, perhaps the fault lies with the main character being so oblivious that it had to take information that long to sink in.

This was a re read for me and I found that I still like it. It has the perfect amount of supernatural elements. Enough to make it intriguing but still believable to be set in the real world. I loved that the supernatural elements took the form of healing. It seems so nice and natural for supernatural powers to revolve around healing. The plot was exciting without trying to fit too much in. I liked all of the characters even if they weren't as developed as they could be. There was no major character arc but I didn't feel that the book was lacking. The writing style was typical for a YA book. It was good for a YA book and if you come in knowing its YA you will have a much better experience than expecting it to hold up to adult standards. My biggest problem with this book is that there is so much I still wanted to know and figure out. So many loose ends. I hope though that they will all get figured out in the sequel. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves supernatural YA.
