Palahniuk's mind must be a very strange place... the author's note at the end that explained the inspiration for the story was the most interesting part to me.

This has become my new favorite book! Choke is disturbing, effectively blurring the line between what is and is not acceptable in our society. Nihilistic to the point of despair, this book is full of great quotes about life in general.

Not what I thought it would be. Didn't enjoy themes of Alzhemiers.

While well written, I couldn't get past the absurdity of the story. A sex addict who chokes in restaurants because he wants to feel love, his mother mentally ill. And he works at a living history museum set in the 1700s. Just not my kind of book at all.

I wanted to like this book since the bare bones plot was so interesting, but it was smothered by too many words and stretched across too many pages. The roles of most of the side characters were insignificant, so much so that this could probably be rewritten with only three characters and not lose any value. So much emphasis was placed on making the main character's quirks seem vague that it defeated the purpose. I liked catching references to how the main character viewed himself, but I couldn't enjoy figuring him out because his voice was too overbearing.

I had no trouble reading through the book and it was engaging enough that I didn't abandon it, but when I finished I felt like I'd just read through a waste of time.

Fantastic read- turning an unlikable character into someone worth rooting for? Not easy.

Why does Palahniuk throw in time travel at the last minute? Even if it's not real. It always feels like this Ex Machina to make the book more interesting and . . . it never does for me. If you took it out, you'd miss nothing since it was brought up in one quick, throw-away line, and then another at the very end.
I don't think I've seen a book use the word 'dude' so much, I absolutely detested it at the end. I also was not a big fan of the main character referring to his genital organs as 'dog', that really didn't sit well with me, it was unnecessary.

Final Verdict: Not for me. The whole book was hard to get through, read only if you've loved his other works. If you like it, good for you.

I did not like this book, it was harsh and ugly. I'm sure that's what the author was going for but it doesn't mean I want to read that kind of thing. I would not read it again or recommend it to anyone.

Wow

I was recommended this book by one of my best friends. I went in blind, other than knowing that it’s the same author who penned Fight Club. I was pleasantly surprised how entertaining this book was. It was a real page turner and I enjoyed it, thoroughly. A nice mix of drama and dark humor, it was easy to read in short order.
