I'm not sure I can adequately explain how well done this is. Like Vernon's other series, Dragonbreath, this is perfectly illustrated, contains rich humor that will appeal to both kids and adults, and walks a fine line between being about adventure and the reality of friendships and family relationships. This, however, also has that very 21st century 'girl-power' vibe going on, and using the notoriously passive Sleeping Beauty twist to show it is genius.
A perfect thing to put in the hands of any 6 year old who has tired of Magic Treehouse, the balance between illustrations and large font make these terrific for kids moving from chapter books to serious kid lit.

A fun little sleeping beauty retelling with an emphasis on breaking traditional gender roles within fairytales. The princess is a heroic adventurer and saves a prince to help break a curse upon her kingdom. Overall a fun read that I know I would have devoured as a child and am now still able to enjoy as an adult.

This is a book that all children should have, featuring a tough, clever, atypical princess (never mind that she is also a hamster). However, the adults in their lives will probably appreciate the book more—like “Fractured Fairytales” on the _Rocky and Bullwinkle_ cartoons or the Shrek movies, the joyful twisting of traditional tropes will be funny to children and absolutely hysterical to adults. The format of the book is part beginning reader (large type), punctuated by graphic novel. I noticed that my local library offers audio versions; I can’t see how those can possibly work, even though the graphic portions are fully integrated and integral to the story.
