I mostly found it confusing and brutal, although near the end it started to be more interesting. Every single character acts like a Bad Ass, which makes for a not-very-enjoyable read for me - like, more exploration of the Death love story and loss of child would have been better - that was by far the best part of the book. Probably this is just not written to appeal to me.

So after two consecutive reads, I think I'm ready to give reviewing this thing a shot. Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta have done something wonderful here mixing serious science fiction, alternate history, and western elements to build a story that could easily garner as much attention as Saga has over the past year or so. The story begins by showing three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, being reborn/reincarnated as children without Death. Once War, Famine, and Conquest realize that Death is not with them they decide they must find and kill him, immediately setting up the conflict that carries throughout the rest of the story arc.

After the reincarnation scene, Hickman and Dragotta piece together what happened from the Civil War to 2066, and how we form the Seven Nations of America. Our protagonist, a Clint Eastwood like Death dressed entirely in white is finally shown exacting his brand of bloody vengeance upon all who have wronged him.

What exactly occurred between the Horsemen and a myriad of other questions are introduced very quickly to the reader which can make the story a bit difficult to keep up with at first. The payoff is definitely worth it and the end of the trade seriously leaves you wanting for more.

Incredible visuals in an intriguing world, but the story and characters have yet to really grab me.

I'll definitely keep reading, but with increased skepticism.

Love the artwork, love where the plot is going, and I love the world that's been built up. Really excited to continue!

Wow, so East of West sucked me right on in. I was skeptical at first, because I was thinking, "another horror western?" but I was surprised by this one. It's not just a horror western, but a very violent, gritty, pessimistic apocalyptic mash-up of sci-fi with futuristic technology, fantasy with nature magic, and alternate history with mythological and horror flavors.

The art is great, and the mystery of the setting and plot pulls the reader along, even if this is a first volume.

The depictions of the seven nations making up the US in the setting use exaggerated stereotypes of different "cultures," which could be considered somewhat offensive, but it works, for the most part, especially since everything is already so dark an pessimistic, and makes the world intriguing. The depiction that I liked the least, disappointingly, is of Death as a gun-slinging angsty-in-love cowboy, especially since he's the main character. I'll probably get the next volume from the library to see where the series goes, and if I start to like Death's incarnation any better.
