A great exorcism story. Enjoyed the two timelines of the main character, Merry, today giving an interview about her past being on a reality show when she was a kid.  Creepy vibes throughout the book.  The end is reminiscent of part of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Okay, it's the next day:
I couldn't sleep last night because this book had gotten under my skin and made me incredibly anxious. Hours went by and that ending, and honestly everything, just sank deeper and deeper in til my body was like "you ain't allowed to relax lol."

This wasn't horror in the sense that I couldn't sleep because I thought a demon was gonna jump out at me. No. I couldn't sleep because my heart ached too much. I couldn't sleep because I wanted to scream at the characters "how could you let this happen?!?" Not at Mary - her parents. Marjorie needed some kind of inpatient treatment. Or something that wasn't a TV SHOW PORTRAYING HER MENTAL ILLNESS AS POSSESSION. WTF. I'm so angry at the parents.

This deserves five stars for making me get legit creeped out while listening to it in the middle of the day in an office

Not necessarily for everyone, but this had JUST what freaks me out. Watching your family member turn into something just Wrong, and you don't understand why and can't help them. There were many times that I really didn't know who was faking, who was going crazy, and how everything was going to work out. If it worked out at all

Having Merry be a child throughout the bulk of the book worked very well, though I will say she doesn't always TALK like a child. The sister character was also inconsistent with his she acted and reacted to her own situation, but it makes it all that tragic.

It’s too gross for me. I read a lot of horror and I don’t mind fire, but the descriptions of vomit, urine, defecation, was too much for my liking.
